It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Victor Richard “Rick” Barnes of Peterborough. Rick passed away suddenly at home, with his family close by his side, on Sunday, November 6, at the age of 74 years.
Rick is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Doreen, whom he lived to make happy up until the day he died; devoted daughters Adrienne (John) and Ashlee (Michael); three cherished grandchildren, Blake, Samuel, and Reid, who were forever the little apples of his eye; his sisters Carroll and Mary Jane; his dear friend Pat; and many nieces and nephews who were all adored by “Uncle Ricky.”
Rick was predeceased by his mother, Violet; father, Victor; his parents-in-law, Clifford and Elsie; and his best friend Michael.
Rick was unapologetically himself. He showed his daughters through example that doing the right thing was far more important than being liked. Rick was fiercely loyal to those he loved and was the glue that held his family together. A proud grandpa, he showed up for as many hockey and soccer games, Judo tournaments, swimming lessons, and family picnics by the beach as his health would allow. Rick was a true blue Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan and the kind of sports fan that never spoke unkindly about his teams and their players, even when they disappointed. Rick was also a careful and conscientious man and used these qualities to meticulously complete home improvement projects, genealogy research, and to organize his finances and other affairs before his passing. He was kind, honest, and courageous. We are forever grateful and could not have been luckier that he was our dad.
Rick was a deeply private person. At his request, no service will be held. Donations may be sent to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation in lieu of flowers. The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Peterborough Family Health Team, Peterborough Regional Health Centre, and Princess Margaret Hospital for taking such good care of our dad, allowing us to have so many precious years with him.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.comstockkaye.com for the Barnes family.
