3/19/1940 – 1/29/2025
Betty Ruth Gibbs Doss Hammond went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 29th, 2025. Betty was born on March 19th, 1940 in Forest, Mississippi, to the late William Lee Gibbs and Eva Mae Perkins Gibbs Luke.
Betty grew up with three younger siblings, Jerry, Steve and Nancy. At an early age she began helping with household chores, cooking, helping in the field, and picking cotton. She graduated in a class of 13 students from high school.
On May 11th, 1957 she married her sweetheart Wesley “Woody” Doss. Wesley was enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served for 20 years. They soon welcomed their two sons: Wendall James and Kenneth Wayne. There were many moves with Military life, including San Antonio, Okinawa, Hawaii and finally to Austin Texas. Woody passed away in April 2004, after a brief illness with cancer. During this time, Betty took meticulous care of him, cooking his favorite dishes, making sure he was eating and drinking, and driving him to San Antonio for treatment. Betty and Woody were married for almost 47 years at the time of his death.
Betty worked at several places during her lifetime, including as a manager at McDonalds, and at Sears in Hancock Center in the Customer Service Department. She also taught piano lessons.
Betty was known for her dedication to her church, to her family, and to her community. Her signature expression of love was cooking for others. She was known for her delicious meals, especially on holidays, when she’d spend days preparing food. She also always put others before herself. When those same holiday meals were served and people would start eating, she would immediately ask people if they needed anything else before she would sit down to eat. She usually cooked enough for 50 people, even if it was just her family there. She sent tons of left overs home with each family. As her granddaughters have said: even her scrambled eggs were on another level. She is best known for her famous ‘dressing’, which has been written down by her family, so that it can be made in her memory for holidays.
Betty was a devoted mother to her sons. She enjoyed dressing them in matching clothes when they were little, even if they didn’t enjoy it as much as she did. She did her best to bring them up in the church, attending Sunday School and church every Sunday, and instilling the importance of family in them from an early age.
On December 17, 2005, Betty married Anthony “Bob” Hammond. Bob quickly adopted Betty’s family and made them his own. Bob and Betty’s love was a shining example to others. They enjoyed many years of traveling, both in the states and internationally. They went on many cruises with Bob’s best friends from England, Mervyn and Nancy Tooke. They also made many trips to visit Betty’s sister and brother when they were still living in Forest, Mississippi. They also loved going to Branson, Missouri and going to all the shows. They loved playing games and would sit and play Yahtzee night after night.
Betty was a devoted Christian and always attended church. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and brought food to those ill or in need. Betty attended Parmer Lane Baptist Church for years. After it closed, Bob and Betty began attending Walnut Creek Baptist Church.
Betty has spent the last three years living with Wendall and Ruth on the farm. You’d often find Bob and Betty sitting outside on the porch just watching the animals and enjoying the sunshine before Bob passed away in June 2022 after a brief illness.
Betty is survived by her loving son and daughter-in-law Wendall & Ruth Doss, daughter-in-law Tracy Doss, Grandchildren: Jessica Doss Losch and husband Ryan, Jackie Doss, Dr. Marina Doss McLerran and husband Roy, Alder Hood and partner Frost Holliman, Erica King, and Adrienne Brown and husband Drew, and great-grandson Jayce Brown. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents William Lee Gibbs and Eva Luke, spouses Wesley Doss, Bob Hammond, son Kenneth Doss, brothers Jerry Gibbs and Steve Gibbs, and sister Nancy Gibbs Reeves.
