Charles Miller was born September 10, 1939, to George and Willie Miller at a farm home in the McMillin community that was founded by his Great Grandparents, Capt. N. D. and Vollie McMillin, in San Saba County.
When Charlie was 8 years old, he lost his right leg in a farm accident, but never let that prevent him from doing anything he set his mind on doing. He went on to graduate from San Saba H. S. in 1958.
Charlie’s father seemed to have nicknames for most close family members and called Charlie “Little Sunny Man.” Some young family members found that too much to say and shortened it to “Man,” a nickname that continues to be used to this day by many of his relatives.
After graduating from High School, “Man” moved to Austin to further his education and enrolled in a business school to study senior accounting. He then began a 34-year career with the Texas Railroad Commission. For the last 28 years of that career, he supervised the Motor Carrier Insurance Section and retired on September 30, 1993.
In 1962, while living with working buddies, “Man” met Bettye Jo Blaha. They began their 58-year marriage, which ended with Bettye’s death in 2020. They were active members of Hyde Park Baptist Church for nearly a half century, serving in many ways. Earlier this year, Charles transferred his membership to Crestview Baptist Church in Georgetown.
Charles and Bettye’s home in Georgetown was a gathering place for family events at holidays and especially at Christmas with Bettye’s many Christmas decorations.
Charles was a devoted husband, caring for Bettye during her lengthy illness. He gave generously of his time to others, such as starting and leading a monthly prayer breakfast. Friends remember his willing helpfulness.
Charles died August 31, 2023, after a brief illness, with frequent visits by family and friends. Charles is predeceased in death by his parents, George and Willie Miller, his brothers George and Gene and their wives Betty and Patsy, his sister “Marty” Brister, and his brother-in-law Bill Wieland. He is survived by his sister Shelby Riley and her husband Len, his brother-in-law Tex Brister, his sister-in-law Patsy Wieland, and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service for Charles will be held Friday, September 15, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Section K of Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery, 14501 North Interstate 35, Pflugerville, Texas 78660.
IMPORTANT DRIVING NOTE: When you drive north on the northbound IH-35 feeder road, there are two cemeteries, and it is easy to confuse them. This is the northernmost of the two. It is NOT the Cook-Walden Memorial Hills Cemetery!
CEMETERY MAP: https://www.dignitymemorial.com/dfsmedia/042808e1630c49a48950d5077d6556eb/44034-source He will be buried in Section K (Old Rugged Cross). You should see the tents at the burial site. Note that Interstate 35 is to the left, so if you are going north on the northbound feeder road, you will first encounter the funeral home. Section K (Old Rugged Cross) is NNE of there, almost to the fence line.
