Don was born March 6, 1955 in New Braunfels Texas. He spent his childhood growing up in the New Braunfels area and fell in love with Naegelin’s Bakery at a young age. After graduating from New Braunfels High School Don went to Abilene Christian University for three years and then transferred to Southwest Missouri State, graduating with a degree in Communications. After getting his degree he moved to St. Louis, MO and worked with Stanley Shipp for one year. He then moved to Memphis, TN where he met his beautiful wife of 43 years Tricia. They were soon married and Don went on to get a Masters of Divinity from Harding School of Theology there in Memphis. Don spent a couple years in the ministry, working as an associate minister in Burlington, MA and then as a campus minister at South National Church of Christ in Springfield, MO. During this time his first two sons, Jesse and Daniel, were born. Soon after Don and family moved to Austin, TX to be closer to his father. After moving to Texas his daughter Jenny and third son Aaron were both born. Don had a variety of jobs in Austin while on his way to finding his niche in the insurance industry, working for Aflac, Mercury Insurance, and Medicare. He truly loved helping people in need and explaining the mundane world of insurance in an enjoyable and loving way.
Don had a strong faith that continued to grow throughout his life. He loved his family dearly and had a special place in his heart for his 6 precious grandchildren. During the years He spent his time coaching his kids in sports, involving himself in Boy Scouts and many camping trips, and would always make sure he was home in time for dinner with his family. In his younger years Don loved to run, even competing in local races wherever he lived. He was the type of man that music spoke to his heart and he sang with the choir early on at Brentwood. He was also an avid reader with a desire to gain wisdom and knowledge, and was constantly striving to become a better husband, father, and Pa. He was deeply changed by the death of his son Daniel, and devoted himself to prayer, reading and reflecting on God’s word. He was a quiet man, but was able to communicate his faith in a deep and thoughtful way and enjoyed engaging in conversations with people, even complete strangers. There is of course much more that could be said about him and the posture of his heart and the genuine love he had for his family and church. Thanks be to God for the faith he had in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Don was preceded in death by his Father and Mother, Ray and Jewel Bynum, his sister Brenda Akin, his brother John Ray Bynum, and his second son Daniel Bynum.
Don is survived by his wife, Tricia of 43 years, his two sons Jesse Bynum of Taylor, Texas , Aaron Bynum of Denver, Colorado, his daughter Jenny Bailey and her husband Will Bailey, and their children Seren, Aidan, Cian, and Roisin Bailey of Douglas, Wyoming, his daughter-in-law Ashton Bynum and daughters Reid and Ellis Bynum of Garland, Texas, and a half brother Marvin Nance of Garland, Texas.
