Emily Hartshorne Schwartz, 79, an Austin resident, passed away on July 18, 2020 at 11:30 AM. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 11, 1940. She attended the Chicago Laboratory School of the University of Chicago as her elementary school and graduated from Harvard University in 1962 with a Bachelor’s in history.
She subsequently earned a Ph.D. in History from Stanford University. This led to a teaching career. She taught in several schools, notably the Nichols School of Buffalo, New York. In the 1990’s, Emily became a lawyer, earning her law degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Emily was married to Nicolas D. Goodman from 1962-1995. She married Philip J. Schwartz in October of 1999.
In addition to her teaching career, Emily worked as a lawyer for the State of New York from 1995 to 1998, when she moved to Austin. In Austin, Emily served as lawyer for Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas. Emily was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church and was on the board of the Cherry wood Neighborhood Association.
Emily is survived by her husband, Philip Schwartz; her children, Charles and Eleanor Goodman; and her grandchildren, Lily and Henry Goodman.
