Fred Sherrille Roucloux was born in San Antonio, Texas on October 5, 1933, to Alfred Alexander and Ella Rose Roucloux. He entered into eternity on May 22, 2023, surrounded by the arms of family who adored him. He was a child of the Greatest Generation, and grew up during WWll near Kelly Airforce Base in San Antonio. He was a 1952 graduate of South San High School, his interests included athletics, art, marching band, and Jr. ROTC. Upon graduation, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Station, Illinois. While working as a hospital corpsman, he met a petite, dark-haired beauty who was a nurse and an officer, named Lynn Bowersock. He was smitten and after a short courtship the couple were married in 1955.
Fred and Lynn returned to San Antonio Texas, where Fred attended San Antonio City College earning an Associates of Arts Degree. While in San Antonio they began their large family. In 1958 they moved to Austin, where Fred studied art at the University of Texas. Fred and Lynn’s family spanned 12 years and encompasses five girls; Betsy, Rebecca, Catherine, Sara, Brooke and one son, Daniel. Fred found each of his children interesting and always had a sincere appreciation for them, both as individuals and collectively, knowing their flaws but highlighting their strengths. Lynn was Fred’s true love, and his compliments to her beauty and her cooking were daily pronouncements. His devotion over their 66-year marriage and throughout her Parkinson’s illness until the time of her passing was extraordinary and reflective of his deep loyalty. He said that one lifetime was not enough to hold his love for her. Fred and Lynn were members of Tarrytown Baptist Church for over fifty years. Fred was a member of the Church Council, a Church Elder, Deacon, Bible Study and Sunday School member, creative designer for Sunday School sets, Vacation Bible School teacher for two-year-olds, and food pantry volunteer. He drove seniors out and about and was a generous Christian who brought along joy with the beliefs he held.
Fred worked for Abel Stationers Office Furniture on Congress Avenue for many years. He began his own business, Roucloux Repair Service, in 1978 and operated it for several decades, and stated it being one of his “proudest accomplishments”. Working with his hands was always an important part of Fred’s life; be it through welding artistic toys and figures, refinishing antiques, building wooden toys, sewing curtains, painting in oils and acrylics, sketching, and drawing in ink on clay pots, or deer hides, repairing office furniture… it was through this process of art into being that he found truly rewarding and a mainstay for his existence. Fred’s interests were varied in the arts, and music and history and as an avid collector. He said it was his goal to learn something new each day. He loved reading about Frida Kahlo, Willie Nelson, Kahlil Gibran, James Herriot. Singing along with Alexa in his final months was a technology he put to good use and he really could belt out the hits!
Fred’s big personality could fill up a room, and is the embodiment a of larger-than-life character. He labeled himself a full-time cusser and a part-time liar! Fred has been known for his witty humor, mischievous pranks, booming voice, storytelling and story stretching, beautiful singing, love of food, cats and dogs, art and love of family. Fred was a lifelong learner who was always on the cusp of honing a new skill, traveling to another destination, creating a new piece of art, buying another pair of spurs or native American pottery and looking forward to the next good Mexican food platter or Dan’s cheeseburger with extra onions!
Fred is survived by; his children: Daniel (Sandy) Roucloux, Betsy (Mike) Murphy, Rebecca Avery, Catherine (Chris) Eckhoff, Sara (Walter) Krudop, Brooke (Jim) Andrews.
