Helen was a dynamic force in this world and made a difference in all walks of life. She began her career at Superior Dairies in Austin, as a secretary where she met the love of her life, Dale Miller. They were married in 1950 and Helen went to work at the State Capital of Texas as a secretary for various governors during her 15 years. While at the capital, Helen used her ability to organize and increased the enrollment of an employee assistance program that provided services to them. She left her work at the capital to begin a 30 ½ year career with National Western Life insurance company as a supervisor and eventually becoming a Vice President before retiring. Throughout her time there, she encouraged, supported and assisted employees to reach their personal goals. Helen was known for her work ethic, organizational skills and being a friend to all.
Helen was actively involved in her church, Gateway Baptist for the past 65 years and was a role model to all for her love of the Lord. She was a non-stop force there and was recognized as the person that would get a job done. Helen would organize the “church ladies” to cook when an event took place at the church. She was famous for her roast, macaroni and cheese and pound cake that always made it to the table at an event or to one’s home.
Helen was known to many as Red because of her fiery red hair that was her signature trademark since birth. She overcame a speech disability, stuttering and was an inspiration to those who had this same issue. She could tell a good joke and spin a great story about anything.
Helen was married to Dale Wright Miller for 48 years and they had 3 children: Dale Jr, Larry and Tina. Helen is survived by her son, Dale Jr and his wife Susan and their children Amy and Lisa. Amy is married to Jamison Hawthorne; Lisa is married to Homer McClinton and their children, Lily and Sophia; son Larry and his wife, Elizabeth and their son, Chad and his three children, Chad Jr, Coby and Christina; daughter Tina and her husband Mike and their sons, Andrew and Matthew. Along with her children, Helen leaves behind nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her dearly. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Sr; parents, Jess Worthington (father), Bill Cartwright (step-father) and Maggie Cartwright; and sister Irene Foley.
A celebration of Helen’s life will take place on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the Mausoleum Chapel of Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville. She will be laid to rest at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank all of the extraordinary ICU (Covid) nurses/staff at Seton hospital and the nurses/staff at Austin Rehab/Wellness Center for enhancing Mom’s life while she was at each of these facilities.
