Marilyn was born February 20, 1935, near Osceola, Arkansas to Will Brown Howerton and Fleta Burfield Howerton. She passed over into glory on September 28, 2025, at the age of 90.
The family moved to the Texas Panhandle in the late 1930’s then to Uvalde in 1946. Marilyn met her future husband, Bill Peebles, in Uvalde in 1953. They were married at Baptist Temple Church on June 11, 1954. They had four children between 1955 to 1959 (deAnn, Medaris, Raynice and Jay). In the early years of their marriage, they lived in several cities in Texas following Bill’s employment until they settled in Austin on January 1, 1965, when he joined the Texas Army National Guard at Camp Mabry.
Marilyn was a wife and mother, Sunday School teacher and church volunteer. She started working outside the home in 1967 and held various retail jobs. Her favorite was working at a Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio because she had been using the cosmetics since she was 15 years old. At 90 years old, she had a beautiful wrinkle-free complexion that everyone admired.
Marilyn and Bill went on an extended tour for the U. S. Army Reserves in 1980 and ended up experiencing other states besides Texas. They enjoyed living in New Jersey, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Virginia. They had a great time in their travels and made lots of wonderful friends. Marilyn even got to work at Mount Vernon and really enjoyed it.
Upon Bill’s retirement from the Army Reserves, they decided not to stay in Austin. Instead, they purchased 35 acres of ranch land between London and Junction, Texas. They thoroughly enjoyed their time with the chickens and goats and the small community of London.
After 11 years of country living, they sold the ranch and moved to Burnet in 2007. They were members of First Baptist Church in Burnet. Marilyn took free rein in decorating their new house on RR 963 with very happy colors since this was going to be their forever home. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2014 at the VFW Hall with a very large crowd of family and friends.
After a very short illness, Bill passed away on December 28, 2017. Marilyn had health issues but spent time with the family on birthdays and holidays which were always very boisterous and loud. All 4 of her children had married and blessed her with nine grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
Marilyn eventually moved into Pafford Place Assisted Living in Burnet and then spent the last couple of months at Arbor House in Marble Falls. The caregiving staff at both facilities, as well as Altus Hospice, were absolutely wonderful.
We will all miss her great smile, her loving and giving nature. But rejoice that she is now with loved ones in Heaven.
A visitation will be held at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, located at 14501 North Ih-35, Pflugerville, TX, 78660, on October 4, 2025, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.
