A loving and deeply loved wife, sister, mother, grandmother and friend, Jayne Louise Winslow Brandon of Austin, Texas, passed away on Sept. 18, 2018 at the age of 87. She was born to Frank and Jane Winslow in Houston, Texas, on Oct. 22, 1930. Her earliest memories began with summers in Rippey, Iowa, where she helped her grandfather, the town’s physician.
She graduated from Houston’s Lamar High School in 1948, where she was proud to be selected for the ROTC Sponsors. In 1950 she graduated from Stephens College in Missouri, where she was president of her social service organization. While at the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, she met her husband of 65 years, Jack, on a blind date. She tirelessly supported Jack throughout his career as an attorney for the U.S. Army in Japan and then for oil companies in the U.S. With each new place they moved, Jayne was gifted in making a new circle of friends. Jayne and Jack created warm homes in Yokohama, Japan; Houston; Glendale, California; Oklahoma City and Edmond, Oklahoma; and Austin, and taught their family the most important life values. Their four children always knew that home was a good place to be. And though they spread out geographically, Jayne was key in keeping the family connected.
A believer in Christ, she lived a life of faith, grace and gratitude. She was especially grateful to the churches that nurtured her family. Jayne was also a 50-year “golden girl” member of the P.E.O. sisterhood, member of the Assistance League, amateur artist, Japanese flower arranger, consummate hostess and the ultimate good traveler. Having taken public speech lessons as a teenager, she was a poised and unassuming speaker whenever called upon. She had a kind word for every situation and a gentle presence. She was known for her beautiful smile and sincere expressions of joy or surprise. She was an encourager and role model to her husband, children, children-in-law, and grandchildren, and demonstrated patience, goodness, trust, civility, strength, quiet courage and determination, and humility. She didn’t push her opinions, but we wanted to hear them.
Jayne is lovingly remembered by her husband Jack; brother John Winslow of Washington, DC; son-in-law John Garland of St. John’s, Newfoundland; daughter Martha King and son-in-law Charlie of Austin; daughter Catherine Glazener and son-in-law Wes of Austin; son Frank Brandon and daughter-in-law Bridget of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; and eight grandchildren – Claire Garland, Kourtney Brandon, Graham Garland, Hillary King, Alyssa Glazener, Jeremy and Aimee King, Will Glazener, and Andrew Glazener. She is preceded in death by parents Frank and Jane Winslow and daughter Elizabeth Garland.
A celebration of her life and resurrection will be at 11:00 a.m. on September 25, 2018 at Austin Baptist Church.
