Jimalee Slatter Davis was dearly loved. She passed on November 29, 2012. She was born at home in the shadow of the Port Bolivar, TX lighthouse on December 8, 1930. From soda jerk, to pharmacy tech, to OB/GYN office nurse, she carved out a living for herself and son, Ronnie Lee Smith. In the early 1950s when women didn’t do such things on their own, she bought a lot and contracted the building of her own home in Tyler, TX. While working a weekend shift at Carpenter Francis drug store, she met a handsome U.S. Marine in uniform, MSgt Guymon Gilpin Davis. She had the right RX for his cold and for his future happiness. They married in 1960. Together they had a daughter, Kimberlee Davis. Jimalee and Guy moved from Tyler to Austin in 1966 to their home on Newport Avenue. She then began her career as household engineer insuring Guy and Kim were cared for and happy. She and Guy enjoyed the friendship of many fine neighbors and Guy’s work colleagues. After Guy’s passing in 1994, she moved to Lubbock, TX to be near her daughter and then to San Marcos, TX. She was always Kim’s biggest fan and willing playmate.
Jimalee is survived by her daughter, Kimberlee Davis and Kim’s partner, Jini Miller; granddaughter, Hanna Grace Davis; step-daughter, Sheila Caulkins and husband, Jack; three grandsons, Derek, Bret and Kyle Sharp; nieces and nephews she loved dearly and longtime friends who will remember her for her caring and supportive nature. In death, she has been reunited with her husband, son, parents, two brothers and a sister.
Memorial service for Jimalee is Monday, December 3, 2012 at 3:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 4001 Speedway, Austin, TX. Jimalee loved flowers, but memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association would be welcomed.
