With great regret I announce the passing of my step-father John William Miller, on Thursday March 27th, 2025 at the age of 79. John was born to his parents Clarence Miller and Virginia Miller ne’ Kruger on September 23, 1945, the oldest of six children. He grew up in Rochester, Minnesota and graduated from John Marshall High School in 1963.
Following a short period of work laying railroad ties; John entered the Army on November 18, 1966 and served with honor and distinction until his transfer to the Inactive Reserve on September 20, 1971. While in the Army he served in-field in Vietnam for 11 months, and 24 days; earning the Nation Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with the 60- Device, the Vietnam Service Medal, two Overseas Bars, and a Marksmanship Badge.
Following his service he moved to Houston, Texas and eventually came into ownership of Mr. B’s Trading Post after an apprenticeship in the Pawning Business under Mr. Boone, whose first name I unfortunately cannot recall from my brief childhood time knowing him. Shortly after taking ownership of the Trading Post he met my mother, and he entered my life soon to become my step-father. We all moved to Richmond, Texas shortly before Hurricane Alicia blew through to test our new home’s sturdiness.
Once the Trading Post had run its course, John joined Gillman Auto Group and became the Head Service Writer for both Gillman Honda dealerships in Houston and Rosenberg. While with them he quickly rose to become one of their most-highly lauded employees, winning Customer Service award after Customer Service award for some ten straight years; and ultimately a global Customer Service award for the entire Honda corporation; of which he was rightly proud.
In time, I went away to the Navy; and my mother’s health declined partially due to worry over my welfare away from home. My mother suffered greatly in her last years, and John was with her every day of it while I only saw her last five months of pain after I myself was Honorably Discharged. His love and devotion to my mother in her time of greatest need will always be chief amongst the reasons I will always respect him and be grateful for him in both our lives; an example of decency I hope to mirror should I ever be called upon to display it.
John passed peacefully, and quickly while napping after a shower. He is preceded in passing by both his parents, his wife Dorothy Lockingen Miller, and his sister Mary. He is survived by his brother Jim and Gerald, his sisters Kathleen and Patty; his step-son James, and his step-grand niece Monica whom he came to care for greatly in his last five years.
A graveside service for John will be held Friday, April 4, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home & Cemetery, 14501 N Interstate Hwy 35, Pflugerville, TX 78660.
