John E. Miller (Johnny) was born in northern Oklahoma. His father Clarence did highway work, so they often traveled. As he got older his mother Jessie made sandwiches for him to sell to the workers. Johnny had a younger brother, Richard.
When he was older he moved to Austin and lived with friends, so he could finish high school. He graduated from Austin High School in 1942 and joined the U.S. Army Air Forces. He was a waist gunner on a B-17. His crew was supposed to go on a mission, but thank God the war ended. His family was happy to have him home safe and sound.
Two weeks after he got home, he met Joyce on a blind date. They got along very well, and two years later, on August 27, 1948, they were married. He graduated from the University of Texas, School of Civil Engineering, in 1951. Johnny operated Miller Concrete Inc, along with his father and brother, for many years. Johnny and Joyce had two children: Kenneth in 1952 and Beverly in 1953. Kenneth passed away in 2009 at age 57.
Johnny is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joyce Miller; his daughter Beverly Ann Kuchar; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; and his brother Richard. Funeral Services will be held at 1 PM on Friday, November 16, 2012, at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow the services.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of John E. Miller may be made to Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas or to Hospice Austin's Christopher House. Memorial condolences may be made at www.cookwaldencapitalparks.com.
