Joyce Ann Rundberg, age 89 of Jarrell, TX gained her Angel wings in Heaven on October 5, 2023 and reunited with her loving husband Carl Simon Rundberg. She is preceded in death by her parents, Oscar Henry Foss & Hulda Julia Weidebusch Foss, along with 4 older brothers, Victor, Wendell Louie, Clarence, and George Lee Foss.
Born on March 22, 1934 in Cypress Mill, TX, Joyce was the youngest and only daughter from a family of 5 children. In her early childhood and teen years, she competed in sports such as basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, twirling as well as community events and county fairs. When she was a freshman in high school her family moved from Cypress Mill to Johnson City, after losing their home to a fire. Joyce graduated high school at the age of 17 and soon packed her personal belongings and moved to Austin to begin her working career. She lived with her Aunt Meta and attended the Methodist church where she was baptized. Her first job was at the Texas Insurance Checking Office. There she met the love of her life, Carl (Top) Rundberg. In 50’s fashion, they had a short courting relationship before bonding in marriage on June 12, 1953. Carl was soon drafted into the Army and immediately moved to a military base in New York. Joyce joined him shortly thereafter where they lived in a tiny basement apartment on Long Island. During Carl’s 2 years of service, Joyce gave birth to their first daughter, Cheryl. Three months after her birth they were ecstatic to return home to family and friends in Austin.
Joyce balanced work life between three more births to daughters, Teri, Laurie, and Brenda. After the girls were older and in school, Joyce returned permanently to working at Texas Insurance Checking Office (TICO). She retired as Supervisor in 1993 with a total of 26 years of service.
Carl and Joyce celebrated 64 wonderful, loving years of marriage. Their lives and relationships were devoted to family and togetherness which was instilled in Joyce by her loving parents. In her early 30’s, she resumed sports playing coed volleyball and softball in the Austin City League. Softball quickly turned into competitive play with her husband, Coach Carl, leading the team to the State Championship. Soon after, Carl formed and coached two competitive teams (Adult and Junior) for the family to be involved in. Joyce was the pitcher for the Spurs adult team. With sewing being one of her many talents, she was quickly enlisted to individually sew multiple uniforms for both teams. This took many hours to complete, and all players wore their team uniforms with a high sense of pride. Joyce eventually retired from the game but continued to be involved with score and record keeping for every sporting event of all 4 daughters. She also enjoyed bowling league, and did so for many years with Carl, her daughters, grandkids, and many close friends. In later years Joyce loved sitting on the sidelines supporting her grandkids in their many sporting events and various activities.
Joyce’s greatest joy and pride was being a devoted wife, mother, and was known by all as “Granny.” She loved family gatherings and building a spread of homemade food and iced tea for all to graze on throughout the day. By day’s end, you would see her involved in an intense game of marbles, dominoes, LRC (Left-Right-Center game), ping pong, cards, or board games anyone wanted to play. She was known as the champion at marbles (Wahoo), Five Crown, 42, 84, and about any game she played.
Even in her later years, Joyce never lost her competitive spirit or ability to teach others how to play. She enjoyed watching college sports, Texas Longhorns being her favorite, Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, Spurs, tennis, gymnastics, volleyball, and of course the Game Show Network. Let’s also not forget her love for gambling and scratching lottery tickets! Let’s just say Granny was gifted with the knack to win!
Joyce is survived by her loving daughters and their families, Cheryl Raeke (Charlie), Teri Hoyle (Bobby Moore), Laurie Gordy (Joe), and Brenda Rundberg. She is also survived by grandchildren, Rhanda Schrank (Kevin), Keri Peterson (Jessy Fralin), Danny Nothomb (Kari Navarra), Kemberli Gordy (Nicholas Varga, Sebastian & Gabriella), Wade Gordy (Brittany), Clayton Gordy (Janelle Waits), and great grandchildren, Carlton and Hudson Schrank; Gunner and Holt Peterson; Trevor Verde; Rhett, Wrenley and Reese Gordy; Lynlee, Callen & Cohen Gordy; in addition by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many close family friends.
