

Lucille Agatha Capers, age 95, of Georgetown, Texas and formerly of Uniondale, New York, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 29, 2025. She was born on June 22, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York, to Christine Samuels Cayenne of St. Vincent and Felix Cayenne of Grenada, whose name appears on the Wall of Honor at Ellis Island. She graduated from Girls Commercial High School in Brooklyn.
She met James Capers Jr., a United States Army veteran, at a dance in Harlem, New York. They were married in 1956. The couple later relocated to Uniondale, New York, where they raised three daughters, Gwendolyn, Lily, and Valerie.
Lucille was a founding member of the Dolls and Cents Club on Long Island in the 1970s, where she worked as a travel agent and helped introduce luxury cruising to middle-class families. She became one of the first Black female realtors on Long Island and later founded Capers Unlimited Real Estate in Hempstead, New York. Through her work, she helped hundreds of families purchase their first homes. In 1983, she was honored by the Long Island Board of Realtors as Nassau County Broker of the Year. That same year she was a featured guest on the Los Angeles based television show, Woman To Woman discussing the challenges of managing business ownership and family life. Faith and education were central in Lucille’s life. She was the source of her family’s faith in God and the inspiration for their academic achievements. Lucille’s grandsons were her pride and joy. Lucille’s grandsons were her pride and joy. She was the love of her husband James’ life. They were married for 60 years until James passed away in 2016.
Lucille was legendary for speaking her mind and giving advice to anyone and everyone whether they wanted to hear the truth or not. But she would also give her last dime before letting anyone go without food, clothing or shelter.
Lucille taught her family that all things are possible through Christ who strengthens us and for that most powerful teaching her family will be forever grateful.
She is survived by her daughters, Gwendolyn Capers Wilson, Lily Capers Milliner and Valerie Capers Workman; her son-in-law, Antonio Workman; and her grandsons, Marcus Xavier Workman, Desmond David Workman, and Rawle James Workman. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
Lucille was predeceased by her husband, James Capers Jr.; her parents, Felix and Christine Cayenne; and her sisters, Norma Elaine Sylvester Jackson, Eloise Davis Robinson, and Pearl Goose and her son-in-law, Larry Wilson.
Lucille will be honored at a Home Going Celebration on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. to be held at St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church, 1202 W. Pecan Street, Pflugerville, Texas 78660. She will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia at a later date.
In addition to white and purple lily floral arrangements sent to St. Mary in Pflugerville, Texas for January 3rd, monetary donations may be made in her name to any local food pantry in the United States.
