He attended Madison high school and later married his high school sweetheart Melinda Jones on March 23, 1974.
He enjoyed traveling, fishing, barbecuing no matter the weather; telling jokes and laughing so hard that his stomach would hurt. He liked going out to eat but he enjoyed good food. If it was to his liking, he would say “I don’t care who the president is now” and if he was at a restaurant, he would say he was going to need to wheel barrel to roll him to the car. Even though those are just a few things he liked, he had family that he loved so dearly.
My dad also known as “Poppy time”, had nick names for those in the household and few nick names for family members not in the household. Everyone would laugh at the other person’s name, but they didn’t care for their own names. Tattoo, Ze-plain, Shoe, Talking flukus, Precious of him, Brown, That baby, and DJ, Bambe, Bayou, Jaws, and Pink Panther.
When he taught my brother Mike Jr. to drive for the first time, he took him to a cemetery and told him he could practice there because he couldn’t hurt anybody. He was very hard on his children, but it wasn’t until our later years that we understood he was teaching us life lessons.
Poppy time believed in being well educated and encouraged his family to do the same. He attended Monroe Community College for his Associates. He later attended Rochester Institute of Technology for his Bachelor and then went on to complete his Master’s at Nazareth University.
In 1995, he gave his life to the lord and from that point on, his path would change forever. He was ordained as a ministry in Rochester NY by Bishop LeRoy Anderson (Jurisdictional Bishop of Western NY). After relocating to Austin TX, he continued to follow the path set before him. He worked in Arkansas for a while after moving to TX. He met Bishop LT Walker who later ordained him as an Elder. He received his counseling certificate from Capella University. He later started a church in Round Rock and called it Pressing Towards the Mark. Bishop Samuel E Iglehart presented him with a certificate on Jan 8, 2011, to mark the beginning of Pressing Towards the Mark church. He continued to press on to receive all that God had for him and received his chaplaincy in ministry certificate from North Texas Collegiate on January 26, 2019.
His favorite verse was Philippians 3:14. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Poppy has finished his journey and has passed the torch to his family and friends to carry. He has fought the good fight of faith and has been rewarded.
Poppy is preceded in his passing by his brother (Pernell Jones), father (Robert K.C), mother (Willie Mae), and his granddaughter (Heaven).
His memory lives on through his Melinda Jones (wife), Chaya & Bruce (daughter & son in-law) Kristin & Marquis (daughter & son in-law) NaTasha (daughter), Michael Jones Jr. & Latisha (son and in-law) and Karis (son). His nephew, Cory & Monica Douglass and his 1st cousin Issac Carson & wife Alice Carson. 14 grandchildren, Mike III, Jada, Jalen, Keandre, Amari, Skye, Dajhaon (DJ), Hezikiah, Nehemiah, Stephanie, Porcha, Ayanna, Chazity and Chelsea. 2 Great grand, Julian and Michi.
