Milecester LaDon Tubbs was born May 29, 1974, in Dallas, Texas to Don Tubbs and Jo Thompson Tubbs. He was welcomed into the arms of a large and loving family, with aunties and uncles who were like parents and cousins who loved him like siblings.
It is in this community that his love for sports was nurtured and took root. From the little league fields in Oak Cliff to the bright lights of varsity football and baseball games at Duncanville High School, Tubbs thrived. It is during this time that he met his high school sweetheart Tamika and began to create what would be a life of adventure and a legacy of service and love.
He studied at Texas Southern University and Life Chiropractic but ultimately found his professional calling at Georgia Medical Institute, where he became a Certified Patient Care Technician. For more than 20 years, he cared for and supported patients and families who were often at their most vulnerable point in life. Hospice care is as difficult to give as it is to receive, but he did it with grace and determination for many, many years. And being able to personally care for his father was one of his greatest joys.
Being a father to Miles and Leah is what he was put on this earth to do. He was ever-present and their absolute biggest fan, no matter where they were or what they were doing. “Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready” and “We do what we need to do when we need to do it” are mantras that he carried deep and instilled in them. He whispered guidance and reprimand, and shouted praise and words of encouragement. And he has had a camera in his hand capturing their life since the day they entered the world (and we have the VHS tapes, DVDs and thumb drives to prove it).
Coaching is where Tubbs truly came alive. Put him on a field surrounded by a group of excited, adrenaline filled athletes and you saw the real him – eyes bright and wide, whistle swinging on a chain, hat tilted to the side and that beautiful smile on full beam. And when the win came – as it often did – you could almost feel the “Yeah baby” before the words ever left his lips.
Tubbs was a man of few words, but when he spoke you listened and knew that he meant every word. He didn’t require much to be happy and his family will miss that laid-back, love-filled swag that he had about him. He is preceded in death by his best friend and father Don Tubbs and leaves to mourn his mother Jo Thompson Tubbs; wife of 29-years Tamika Hicks-Tubbs; son Miles Tubbs; daughter Leah Tubbs; sister LaShelia Tubbs-Mitchell; and a host of family, friends and loved ones.
The family would like to thank Texas Oncology, St David’s Round Rock Oncology, Hospice Austin and Celebration Church Georgetown for the care and compassion they showed Tubbs and our family in his final days. The journey has not been long or easy, and these teams walked it with us every step of the way.
