Roxanna Schofield was born June 17, 1938 in a little farming community in the Panhandle of Texas called Silverton. She was the first born child of Irving and Lillus Ruth (Ledbetter) McJimsey. Her grandmother helped bring her into this world in a little farm house outside of town. Grandmother Florence Annie (Mamaw Ledbetter) turned one of the drawers into a bed for little Roxanna. She had one brother, George, who passed away on July 6, 2021 in Amarillo, TX. She was a farmer’s daughter and worked hard on the farm. Some of her favorite times were when the Aunts and Uncles and all the cousins would gather to tackle the big jobs. It was fun because they were all together.
Roxanna married her high school sweetheart, Elvin Schofield, on January 11, 1956. She was 18 and he was 19 years old. Elvin came out to the farm one afternoon to ask her for a date. Roxanna’s cousin encouraged him to go ask Roxanna out to the movies. When Elvin arrived at the farm, Lillus Ruth told him that Roxanna was in the barn milking the cows. Elvin faced his fear of bulls to go out to the barn to ask Roxanna for that date. She had on her crusty cow-pie boots and her smelly cow jacket when he showed up in the barn. He asked her out, she said yes, and they were together from then on. They had been married 64 years, 3 months, and 1 day when Elvin passed on April 12, 2021. Roxanna loved supporting Elvin in all his endeavors. They were a team from beginning until the end. Roxanna had much to learn as a young officer’s wife all the way to being a Major General’s wife. Growing up on the farm did not prepare her for this responsibility. Roxanna took pride in helping the younger wives learn how to support their husbands in their military careers. Roxanna also supported Elvin in all of his civilian jobs and organizations that he participated in. They were a powerful team.
Roxanna is survived by 2 daughters, Janna Schofield and Suzanne Huff and her husband Kyle, 3 grandsons, Jay Walbran and his wife Amie, Aaron Spieler and his wife Allyson, and Alex Spieler and his partner Maria Kozdroy, and 2 great grandchildren, Parker and Hadley Walbran. Roxanna also leaves behind her sister-in-law, Martha McJimsey and many cousins, nephews and nieces from the Schofield, McJimsey, Ledbetter, and Lee families.
Roxanna was an active member of Colonial Hills United Methodist Church in San Antonio, TX. She led the prayer and quilting group at church. She was also active in her Sunday School Class. She believed in the power of prayer and continued to pray for all who were in need until the very end. Roxanna was always quick to volunteer to provide a meal to anyone in need or for a special occasion.
Roxanna and Elvin also had many military friends. They called themselves “The Military Gang”. They always enjoyed their monthly dinners together. Wonderful friends but more like family.
Roxanna loved attending family reunions. We all enjoyed the many batches of homemade ice cream and banana pudding she made. She loved talking about family history and hearing about the latest accomplishments in everyone’s lives. She LOVED her family, near and far!
Roxanna loved being a wife.
Roxanna loved being a mom.
Roxanna loved being a Nana.
Roxanna loved opening her home to family, friends, anyone who needed a place to visit, heal, or recover. She always prayed that anyone who came into their home would feel the Love of God and the Peace of God, which surpasses all understanding.
Roxanna spent her last days at Serenity Senior Living in Pflugerville.
She loved to help. “What can I do to help” was her favorite thing to say when she walked into a room. Roxanna had a servant's heart her whole life.
We would like to thank all the caregivers and owners at Serenity who loved her until her last breath: Celina, Paisley, Kendall, Rose, Debbie, Heather, Tomasa, Rachel, Jason and Vonna.
We would also like to thank Comforts of Home Hospice, especially Joanne, her RN, and Rachael, her social worker. The family thanks you from the bottom of their hearts.
“His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of the master.’” Matthew 25:23
