He graduated high school in Mallard, Iowa in 1939 and continued working on the family farm until 1941 when he joined the Navy. He served at several Naval stations as an Aviation Machinist's Mate. Roy was honorably discharged on December 12, 1945 after four years of dedicated service.
After leaving the Navy, he went and lived with his older brother Bernard and helped him on his farm. A year later, Roy was approached by Lloyd Leith on several occasions asking him to come and help pick corn at his farm. Roy finally agreed and the day after Thanksgiving 1946, he got an early start picking corn for Mr. Leith. At lunchtime, Mr. Leith insisted that Roy join the family for lunch. He met the entire Leith family, including their oldest daughter, Jane. Six months later, Roy and Jane were married on June 1, 1947. Roy and Jane took up farming and began raising their family that soon grew to two sons and a daughter. In December of 1955, they sold their farm and moved to Laurens, Iowa where Roy began working for a farm machinery manufacturing company while studying electronics at night.
In 1974, Roy and Jane moved to Austin, Texas to be near their daughter Carol and where the climate was much warmer. After working at Sears for a couple of years, Roy went to work for Texas Instruments where he worked for 23 years. Roy and Jane were active members of PromiseLand Church for many years and together they enjoyed traveling, fishing and spending time with family.
