Shin Jung, beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away in his home in Round Rock, TX on October 25, 2024 at the age of 65. He was limitless in generosity and humor, a beacon of light that led with devotion and good faith. His parting has left a shadow in our lives and he will be deeply missed by the hearts and souls he touched.
Shin was born to Jaebok Jung and Oksoon Hwang on January 1, 1959 in Gyeongju, South Korea. He attended university in Seoul for 2 years before his conscription into the Republic of Korea Army, serving in the Korean Augmentation to the United States Army program as an artilleryman alongside U.S. soldiers. He then returned to university and graduated in 1984 with a degree in Architecture, later working as a systems engineer for Korean Air. It was in 1988 when Shin met the love of his life, Yuling Chiang, in a Chinese class, and the two married in Seoul on May 19, 1991. They welcomed their first child, WIlliam, in April 1993. 5 years later, they made the formidable decision to immigrate to the United States, leaving behind everything they had ever known in pursuit of a better life for WIlliam. Fortunately, Shin was already adept at English and made a smooth transition for his family to settle in Springfield, IL., continuing his work as a systems engineer for EMD. There, the family grew once more in December 2000 with their daughter Rachel. In 2008, Shin brought his family to Austin, TX., where he worked for 3M and eventually General Motors for the remaining duration of his life.
An athlete at heart, Shin enjoyed participating in numerous sports, particularly swimming or playing tennis with his daughter, but he loved golf - so much that he built his own putting green and golf net in his backyard for when he couldn’t tee off on the course. He had an immense appreciation for the outdoors and was always up for adventure, whether it was exploring the glaciers of Alaska or the streets of Austin. At home he was lovingly known as a handyman, dedicating much of his time to home improvement - even briefly working as a licensed contractor - and being able to fix anything from watches to cars. Shin’s true passion, however, had always been planes and aviation. He was an active member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, was an avid patron of air shows, and always had a model airplane to work on.
Shin had an unwavering dedication to his family and career, achieved through hard work and strong will. Laughter and warmth followed him wherever he went, as he was always equipped with a joke or funny story - as was an eager recipient of one. His lighthearted and easygoing nature shone in any conversation, whether with a stranger or a long time friend. He had an appreciation for life and those around him that was greatly admirable and inspiring.
Shin is preceded in death by his father, Jaebok Jung.
He is survived by his wife Yuling; children, William and Rachel Jung; mother, Oksoon Hwang; brother, Shinil Jung; many loving nephews, nieces, and relatives; and his beloved cat, Millie.
A memorial service for Shin will be held Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, 14501 North IH-35, Pflugerville, Texas 78660.
