The angels came to take Stephen Duncan-Smith, age 69, born September 3, 1956, on Tuesday, January 27th, peacefully and surrounded by love. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud Gramps, and a steady presence to all who knew him. Born in The Wirral, near Liverpool, England, Stephen was the second eldest of five siblings.
Known as 'Slim' to friends and family, he attended Sir John Deane's Grammar School in Northwich, after which he began his professional career with ICI, also in Northwich, where his strong work ethic and dedication were evident early on. He later continued his career with Abbott Laboratories in Austin, Texas. Nicknamed 'Limey' by colleagues and friends, he worked faithfully until his medical retirement. Throughout his working life, he was respected for his integrity, reliability, and commitment.
Stephen leaves behind his loving wife of 46½ years, Billie Duncan-Smith. They had known one another for over 50 years and were married in Northwich, England, sharing a life built on love, loyalty, and deep companionship. Together, they were blessed with three children. He is survived by his daughters, Natalie Joy and Noelle Ellen, and by his beloved granddaughter, Aleaha, and grandson, Darrius, who brought him immense joy. He was preceded in death by his cherished son, Darris Alan, who passed as a premature infant and was forever held close in Stephen’s heart.
He is also survived by his older brother, Gary (wife Marian); his younger sister, Lorraine; his sisters-in-laws: Liz Smith and Kalletta (Bryan) Pemberton; his devoted service dog, Mason; and his many nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.
Preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Gladys Smith; his younger brothers, Victor and Marcus; and his father-in-law, W. D. Duncan.
Known for his kind heart, quiet strength, and gentle spirit, Stephen lived his life with humility, compassion, and unwavering devotion to his family. In a final act of generosity, Stephen wished for his brain to be donated to CADASIL research, offering hope and understanding to others. He was first diagnosed in 1997.
Stephen’s legacy lives on through the love he shared, the lives he touched, and the memories that will be cherished forever. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The service will be livestreamed.
