Steve Owings Halladay; a funny, smart, ornery, caring outdoorsman; 64 years young, passed away peacefully in his home on December 16, 2011, following a short and courageous battle with ALS. Steve lived his life extraordinarily well and was a much beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was born on January 7, 1947, graduated from Fayetteville High School in Arkansas in 1965 and migrated to Texas when he came to Baylor University on a football scholarship. He graduated from Baylor in 1970. After serving as an officer in the Air Force, Steve moved to Austin where he worked in banking, land development and historical restoration to support his real love of gunsmithing. It was his passion, his hobby and his eventual profession. He was a lifetime member of the NRA, the Republican party and achieved 32nd Degree Mason. In recent years, "Gramps" particularly loved being active in his grandsons' lives. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Patti Halladay; daughter Tamra Gilley and her husband, Jason; daughter Amanda Horvath and husband, Joe; two grandsons, Aiden and Andrew Gilley; and baby Horvath coming in February, 2012. He is also survived by his sister, Whitney Whitelaw, a nephew and niece, and numerous close friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. D. Whitney Halladay, and mother, Pat Halladay. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to special friend Nan Floyd and to Odyssey Hospice, who were constant sources of support and care. Friends are invited to celebrate Steve's life in a service at Cook-Walden Capital Parks in Pflugerville at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 18. Visitation will be held Saturday, December 17 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Austin Animal Center Box or a non-profit of your choice.
