Terrell was the fifth child born to Georgia Hunter here in Austin, Texas. He received Christ as a teenager and united with the Rosewood Baptist Church where he remained until after finishing high school. Terrell was a product of the Austin Independent School District, finishing from Anderson High School in 1956. While in high school, he excelled in football and basketball. Upon graduation, he received a four year scholarship to Texas Southern University.
He attended TSU for one year before his life changed directions – he decided to join the Army. While enlisted, he was stationed in South Korea. While stationed there, he was selected to be on the All Army Football team, which allowed him to travel to many Asian countries for their games.
After returning to Austin, he began the process of continuing his education and got married. The couple relocation to Fort Worth, Texas where he enrolled at North Texas State University. There, he received his Bachelor’s Degree and Masters in Biology and Sciences. He taught science and coached football at North Oak Junior High School in Haltom City, Texas, and later he taught biology and coached both football and track at Haltom High School. During that time, Terrell was blessed to become a father – his son, Duane Terrell Hunter was born.
Later, Terrell moved back to Austin, employed by The Texas Education Agency. He worked in Technical Assistance for a few years before becoming the Director of Staff Development where he continued until his retirement. During this time, Terrell united with St. James Baptist Church under Pastor E. M. Franklin. They had a very special bond, working together on many special projects.
In 1977, Terrell’s life took another turn as he decided to marry one of his high school friends, Verdell Earls. She was also a member of St. James and had been previously married and also had a son, Vince Humphries. They immediately became a blended family!
Many will remember Terrell fondly and cherish memories of him. He is preceded in death by his mother, Georgia Hunter and his four older brothers.
Terrell’s life will continue to be celebrated by his wife, Verdell Hunter; his younger brother, Billy Hunter; his two sons, Duane Terrell Hunter and his wife Tiffany Hunter and Vince Humphries and his wife Denise Humphries; four grandchildren: Justice, Jaxon, and Jadyn Hunter, and Devin Humphries; one great grandchild, Jasmine Pitts. He is also survived by his St. James family and friends.
