On May 25, 2022, the Lord whispered to Sister Vera Jurrells Black where she joined her Heavenly Father and received her Heavenly wings. Vera professed a hope in Christ and was baptized at an early age at the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Boyd D. Hansborough.
Vera received her formal education in the Austin Public School System and graduated from L. C. Anderson High School. Vera was united in matrimony to Sherman Williams, Sr., and to that union six children were born.
Vera later wed Willie Black and joined the Greater Swenson Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Tyree King, where she served as a faithful member until her health prevented her from attending.
Vera was loved by many as a Deaconess, Mission Sister, Sanctuary Choir, Women's Chorus member, and Pastors’ Aide Committee. She was also very adept in Floral Design, as well as Special Occasions Sanctuary and Dining Room Designer, along with being a part of many other church activities.
Vera was a dedicated “Sears” employee where she retired after 34 Years of Service. She was very active in her community, always planning and participating in Holiday parties and many other activities. She loved cooking her famous peach cobbler, cornbread dressing, macaroni and cheese, and her pinto beans. She also loved bowling, playing bingo, and cards, but mostly she loved spending precious time with family and friends.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three sisters, two grandsons, a nephew and a niece.
She leaves to cherish her memories, four daughters, Sharon Billingsley of Pflugerville, TX., Yvonne Mitchell (Douglas) of Fort Worth, TX, Cindy Rowe (Leonard) of Austin, TX, and Sandy Williams of Killeen, TX; two sons, Sherman Williams, Jr. (Nicole) of Austin, TX and Curtis Williams, Sr. (Karen) of Pflugerville, TX; two step-daughters, Cathy Black of Austin, TX, and Beverly Arnold of Waco, TX; one brother, Ira Jurrells, Jr., (Ruby) of Georgetown, TX; one sister, Dorothy Howard of Austin, TX; one sister-in-law, Audrey Black of Austin, TX; one brother-in-law, Herman Black, Sr. of Austin, TX; 26 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.
