Dear Science Educators,
In the earliest days of technology, I led the State of Texas to adopt laser discs instead of textbooks. Virginia made sure Round Rock ISD was part of the 25% percent of the state to leap into the future. 
When she retired the first time, I made sure to leap into her position as science coordinator of RRISD. I hoped I was up to the task she set before me. 
All of us followed her lead at the Science Teachers Association of Texas (STAT) and the Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching. (CAST).
She was so loved and respected, we followed her everywhere. She lead by example. We were eager to follow her lead.

Dr. Kenneth Heydrick receiving the top honor from the Science Teachers Association of Texas - "The Virginia Woods Award for Exceptional Contributions and Leadership in Science Education" I'm 2017.

Virginia was a woman of extraordinary intelligence and relentless curiosity. 

Her mind was a vault of information—from physics formulas to state capitols to all 254 Texas counties, which she could recite in alphabetical order. But she didn’t just store knowledge—she shared it. Passionately, purposefully, and always with a spark of joy.

Fiercely strong, yet unfailingly kind, Virginia had a way of getting things done—usually her way. Her drive and focus were legendary. Her colleagues and the public respected her immensely, and young leaders flourished under her guidance. 

She believed in teachers. She often said, “We must always support teachers in every way.”

As Executive Director of STAT from the early 1990s to 2007, Virginia helped shape science education in Texas. She believed deeply in inquiry and the power of curiosity.

Virginia would often testify at the Texas State Board of Education or attend meetings of the Texas Education Agency. State board members came to depend on her expertise and insights. 

Over the years, Virginia became like a second mother to me. For her birthday on July 11—or 7/11, as she liked to say—I would bring her flowers and we would go out for lunch. Our conversations were long, deep, and always the best part of the day.

To honor Virginia, I propose that on every upcoming 7/11, we think of her and try something new—something we are curious about, that stretches our capabilities. It would be a tribute to her legacy, her love of learning, and her extraordinary life.

Often, she would ask me, “Why are you doing this for me?” The answer is simple, Virginia: because you did so much for all of us.

Thank you, Virginia, for everything. You were truly extraordinary.

Virginia and I worked together for many years.   She was the executive director of the Science Teachers Association of Texas (STAT) and I was the exhibits manger for the Association's annual conference.  Virginia was the epitome of efficiency, grace, and wisdom.  Her leadership helped to turn STAT into the largest state science teachers association in the country.  I had so much respect for her and so did everyone who worked with her.  She was special.

Carolyn, I'm so very sorry for the loss of your mom. I know first hand how heartbreaking such a time is. My husband & I will be praying for you and your family.
