William Elliott (Bill) Chambers II passed away peacefully at home in Austin on December 14, 2020 with his loving wife, Linda at his bedside. Bill was born January 9, 1946 in El Centro, California, to Owen A. Chambers, Col ret., USMC and Dorothy (nee Hand) Chambers.
Bill served in the US Air Force as an intelligence analyst from July 1963 to June 1967. He received a Bachelor of Arts (English) in1971 and a Master of Arts (English) in 1973from the University of Texas at Austin.
Bill had more than 30 years of professional experience in planning, designing, writing, editing, and producing for technical, scientific, marketing, and corporate communications. His last job before retiring was as a Lead Writer with the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services, DARS Center for Policy and Innovation.
Bill was a kind man with a twinkle in his eyes and an accompanying dry wit! He never forgot to say thank you. He also was enigmatic, told cool stories, and gave sage advice (but only when requested). Bill was a voracious reader. If we had a question about something, we would ask Bill and he would provide the answer. Those who got to know him were quite fond of him and enjoyed his company. He and Linda were homebodies and enjoyed each other’s company. But they did venture out to visit several national parks and take a cruise in Alaska and a transatlantic voyage of the Vikings. However, the greatest joy for Bill and Linda was spending time with their children and grandchildren whom they loved dearly!
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Owen.
Bill is survived by his wife Linda who was his world. Additionally he is survived by a daughter, Stacey; a son, William (Leanne); two stepsons, Matthew (Elya) Rollins and John (Amanda) Rollins; a grandson, Elliott Chambers; several step grandchildren (Kaislin Rollins, Corbin Rollins, Evie Rollins, Marshall Rollins, Keira Rollins, Mitchell Rollins, Sydnie Culpepper, Maxwell Culpepper, Conner Rollins, Kasey Ray). He is survived by mother-in-law, Dorothy Willcox; two brothers-in-law, Jim and Paul Willcox; and sister-in-law, Sara Robbins. He is also survived by his brother’s wife (Jean), children (Jeanette and Owen) and grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the many devoted and caring healthcare professionals and ancillary staff at North Austin Medical Center and Texas NeuroRehab Center who cared for Bill and made this journey easier. We also wish to thank Suncrest Hospice (especially his hospice nurse, Lynn) for helping us ensure that Bill was comfortable and at peace as he finished the journey at home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Bill’s memory can be made to The ALS Association (als.org).
