

Arthur Francis Nieto (Art), age 94, of Sierra Vista, Arizona, passed away in the Life Care Center on September 29, 2021. He was born on March 30, 1927 in Los Angeles (LA), California to Manuel Nieto and Eva Batista Nieto.
Art graduated from Cathedral High School in LA and instead of attending USC as planned, he felt the call of duty. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and received a battlefield commission while he served during the Korean War. Art served the Army as a Chemical Corps Officer and retired in 1970 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
After his military career, Art worked in the Chemistry Department at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. He moved to Phoenix, Arizona where he worked for Salt River Project.
Art was an active member of Toastmasters International. He spent much of his time after retirement teaching public speaking and leadership skills. Art held many leadership positions and served as a mentor to many members. He enjoyed serving the organization and made many lifelong friends.
Art loved sports. He served as an Umpire and Referee in his spare time and officiated at many of his son’s games. USC was his favorite College Football Team and he loved the Chicago Cubs Baseball Team. He was an avid supporter of ASU, except when they played USC!!!
He is survived by his daughter Angela (Angie) Coolidge of West Virginia and son Anthony (Tony) Nieto of Arizona, grandchildren Samantha Nieto, Steve Nieto, Chris Nieto, Ryan Nieto, two great grandchildren Aria Johnson, daughter in law Karen Nieto, sisters in law Charlotte Andelin, Roberta Martin, Beverly Morlock, nieces Leslie Hermann, Stepanie Martin-Crull, Sandra Martin-Saecker, Connie Fretwell, nephews George Hermann and Johnny Fretwell, and Midnight, his beloved cat.
He was preceded in death by his parents Manuel Nieto and Eva Batista Nieto, son John Michael Nieto, spouse Margie Morlock Nieto, former spouse Ruby Payton Nieto, niece Andrea Andelin, and nephews Jeff Fretwell, and James (Bunk) Fretwell.
Services to be held at the A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuary located at 710 W Bethany Home Drive, Phoenix, Arizona. Public viewing is Wednesday, October 20, 2021 from 5-8. Scripture Service is Thursday, October 21, 2021 at 10:00. Interment will follow the services at the National Cemetery located at 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Arizona.
