Carrie Lee Wu of Phoenix, Arizona, went home to be with the Lord on May 12, 2025 at the age of 91. Carrie was born on September 17, 1933 in Guangdong, China, one of five daughters of George Yun Yung Lee and Edna Yuet Lin Fung Lee. Since 1970, Carrie has called Arizona home. She spent most of her adult life as a wife, mother, grandmother, and caregiver to her family. She was an owner and partner with her husband, Samuel Wu, in his engineering firm until his passing in 2000.
Carrie, along with Samuel (Sam) while he was living, was dedicated to connecting immigrants like herself with the Christian Chinese community wherever the couple resided, over the span of almost 70 years. In the greater Phoenix area, Carrie served the Lord by being active in many aspects of church life, including teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, attending prayer meetings, and more. Her beautiful voice was heard often as she offered special music with Sam. There was hardly a Sunday and Sunday evening church service she and the Wu family missed, which provided a lifetime of welcoming others in the Chinese community to the church family.
Carrie loved helping friends, even learning skills new to her. In her late 50’s, she went to work at a Baskin-Robbins owned by family friends, scooping ice cream and making banana splits just because they needed the help. She even had the privilege of serving Sen. John McCain on one occasion.
In her senior years, Carrie continued to serve in the churches she attended, mostly in children’s ministry such as Vacation Bible School. She maintained regular fellowship and prayer group meetings, continually made new friends, babysat neighbors’ children, and became a grandmotherly figure to all who met her. She also taught a Cantonese language class at the Phoenix Chinese Senior Center on Elm St. for several years.
Carrie was part of a great legacy, both in her own family and in the Christian Chinese community. She was part of the second generation of now four generations of Christ-followers, recipients of the Gospel message through Lottie Moon’s missionary legacy in China. Today, her children and grandchildren continue that legacy in their own lives.
Her visitation and service will be held on May 24, 2025 beginning at 8:30am at Northwest Chinese Baptist Church.
