On February 1, 2021, Dr. Clayton L. Boyer II passed away from a short, hard fought battle with COVID-19. Clayton (Clay) struggled with Parkinson's Disease for several years prior to his battle with the Coronavirus. Clay was born in Phoenix, AZ on October 20, 1941, to Clayton L. Boyer Sr. and Agellah Morris Boyer. In 1942, his family relocated to the Pacific Northwest where in 1943, his younger brother, Thomas, was welcomed. In 1956, his family moved back to Phoenix. Clay attended Camelback High School where he lettered in both basketball and golf. Following graduation in 1959, he attended Weber College on a basketball scholarship before transferring to the University of Redlands (CA), where he completed his Bachelors Degree in 1963. He went on to earn his Masters Degree in 1965, from the University of Arizona, in Rehabilitation Psychology. From 1965 to 1967, Clay was employed with the State Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, both in Arizona and California. Clay began his doctoral study in Rehabilitation Psychology at the University of Wisconsin in 1967 and then transferred to the University of Arizona, completing his doctorate in 1970. His career included the position of Psychologist/Director of Yavapai County Community Mental Health Center in Prescott, AZ, from 1970 to 1973. He returned to Phoenix in 1973 and began practicing psychology at Tri-City Mental Health Center in Mesa, AZ. That led to independent practice, along with consultation and development of a consulting firm, ISHEROS.
Clay leaves behind four adult children: Lisa McKnight, Clayton III, Joshua, and Jason; along with four grandchildren: Austin, Ashley, Abby, and Christian. His children were the "great joys of my life." Clay was an exceptional father, overflowing with love for his family and friends. He will be missed more than words can describe. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Clay's memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation or Parkinson's Research. A small memorial service is planned for immediate family, and a Celebration of Life for Clay is planned for a later date when gatherings are safer.
