Both Harry and Doris have been wonderful friends to Charlie and I. We had many fun times together. They came to our cabin in Prescott for a weekend of games outside fire place telling of good times ,fresh air ,pine trees ,all the mountains had to give. Doris could remember all of the trips that they went on and I mentioned it would be neat for her to make a list of them. Next time saw her she had it all written down. We loved going to her delicious dinners at their home and a great California trip. Where we played games, bought strawberries went site seeing  just a good time for all. We shall miss her love and great smile. Thank you Lord for Doris.

My name is Renee Richardson.  Like Mary Lee Goss, I had the privilege to know Doris thru church.  Doris taught me so much about being a hostess.  As a young girl in the church I watched in amazement as Doris and her crew put on some of the best banquets that I have ever seen.  I remember the lace table cloths and decorations, she made every event very special.  Our family was invited over to Doris and Harry's house for dinner one night.  As we all gathered at the table to eat, I saw Doris put a place mat and plate out on the table with some green beans on it.  Wondering who that was for, pretty soon their little dog jumped up on the stool and ate the green beans as we had our dinner.  How cool was that?  Harry and Doris were the best couple EVER! What an example of what true love looks like.  I also remember their matching sports cars with the personalized plates.  Doris will be missed by all, she was a very very special lady. 

I have been friends with Linda, Doris’ daughter, for many years. 

When I was in high school, I spent a lot of time at Linda’s house.  My home was chaotic and disorganized.  Doris kept her home clean and organized.  Her kitchen cabinets were full with organized, stacked & labeled, Tupperware holding pasta, cereal, bread, etc. 

One year I was invited to go on a family vacation to California.  On the road, I mentioned I had a headache.  Doris sprang into action pulling Tylenol from her purse.  She had a gallon jug of water and I was wondering how I was going to drink from it.  Next, Doris handed me a small plastic fold up cup with water. I was amazed of her magic.  During the week in California she provided many needed items besides Tylenol, such as, nail clippers, bandaids, toothpicks, Kleenex, even a light sweater for the evening breezes. 

At 16, I came to understand that whatever anyone needed, Doris had it in her purse.  I vowed to grow up to be like Doris.  She was caring, non-judgmental and didn’t just talk about her Faith, but showed others by her actions. Now that I am a mother and grandmother, I too try to anticipate others needs and have everything in my purse. 

When Linda was going thru some of Doris’ things, she gave me a small plastic fold-up cup to remind me of that summer trip that had such an impact on my adult life.  A reminder to how the smallest of words and actions can have a lasting effect on others.  I am sure Doris is in Heaven making sure all the Tupperware bowls have lids and are properly labeled!

Doris was a friend of our family.  My parents and the Rowlands were friends for many years.  Her husband, Harry, grew up with my father in western NY.   We extend our sympathy and love to you at your mother’s home-going. Prayers for peace and comfort at this sad time.  

Doris Rowland was one of my best friends from the time I met her at our church. Bethel Baptist of central Phoenix. We spent many times making things happen in the fellowship area of our church . Doris had so much knowledge in the kitchen and food service area. For years she led the ladies in food prep when missionaries would come or it was time for Mother’s Day dinners or Christmas dinners. Thanksgiving dinners were an enormous project at our church and for many years Doris oversaw the whole dinner prep and clean up.  I was privileged to work under her. I learned so much. When we relocated to Whitton Ave Bible Church  she and Harry went along with us and we continued to be involved in the kitchen area. She was like a mother-friend to me being 20 years my senior but I never felt the age gap between us.  Just good friends for 47 years.  Doris and Harry were like the family we couldn’t live near.  I’ll miss her always.  Mary Lee Goss.
