

He was born in Hudson, NY on March 26, 1939 and grew up in Verona, NJ. In high school he was a member of the National Honor Society and enjoyed extracurricular activities in soccer, band, orchestra and dance band. He graduated from Union College in Schenectady, NY in 1962 with degrees in Civil Engineering and Liberal Arts. In college he was a member of the Sigma Phi fraternity, played and managed the Concert Ensemble, and also formed and managed the college football band. After college, he joined General Electric’s three-year Manufacturing Training Program and transferred to Phoenix in 1969 to work in General Electric’s Computer Department. GE became Honeywell and subsequently Bull. His assignments were in facilities, industrial engineering and program management before becoming Director of Program Management. His work involved significant travel to Europe and Asia. His final responsibility was as Director of Manufacturing based in Massachusetts for computer operations in Phoenix and Lawrence, MA. Ed retired from Bull in 1993 after 31 years and returned to Phoenix. Subsequently, he worked as Vice President or General Manager for several small computer companies in the Phoenix area.
Ed served on the Save the Mountains Commission in Phoenix in 1970-71. He also served as director and President of the Honeywell Retirees Club, director of the Deer Valley Credit Union and board member of several home owners associations in Peoria and Phoenix.
Ed married the love of his life, Jo Ann Carlson, of Lansing, Michigan. in 1984. They enjoyed working on their residential rental properties, travelling, attending Credit Union seminars and visiting their cabin in Flagstaff, AZ. He loved his two dogs Miss Muffie and Beau, who cherished him and were always at his side. He liked listening to big band music, reading, and history. He is survived by his wonderful son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Karalee Carlson who provided loving care until his passing. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Halei Jo McDonald (Carlson), Nathanial W. Carlson and Samual A. Carlson and two great grandsons David and Gavin McDonald.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife Jo Ann Carlson and a grandbaby Nikolas Kodie Carlson of Peoria, AZ. Also, his mother, Phyllis D. Frick (Dann), of Phoenix, AZ and both his father, Edward C. Frick and sister, Diana L. Frick of Hudson, NY.
Ed was capable, cooperative, and dedicated to achieving excellence in everything he did. His personal integrity enabled him to build relationships based upon honesty and trust. With his pleasant personality and the thoughtful, kind and generous manner that characterized his interactions with others, he was loved and respected by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed. The family takes comfort with the thought that he is reunited with his beloved Jo Ann.
At Ed’s request, he will be cremated and there will be no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Hospice of The Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014 or a charity of one’s choice.
