Ellen Marie Munson died peacefully in her home of 60 years, surrounded by family, on September 15, 2015. She was born Ellen Marie Robertson to Ole and Bessie Robertson on September 25, 1931, in Hartford, CT, and was raised on a farm in Plainville, CT.
She attended schools in Plainville and Cushing Academy in Massachusetts. She married the love of her life, Bill, and they enjoyed over 60 years together.
They lived in Shelburne Falls, MA, from 1951-1954. Then, they moved to Phoenix, AZ, where Bill was hired as a high school teacher/coach. They bought a brand new house in 1955 and she said she never wanted to move again. And, they didn't. From 1974-2006, they enjoyed a summer home in Munds Park, AZ. They belonged to the Pinewood Country Club where she golfed with the Ladies' 9-Holers and worked at the clubhouse and youth center. Together, they enjoyed dancing, Keno, horse racing, dog racing, playing cards and Yahtzee with family, golfing, bowling, and spending time with good friends. She excelled at her title of wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, friend, and neighbor.
She was there for her family whenever needed. She devotedly took care of Bill for his remaining 10 years after he suffered a stroke in 2002. She is survived by her son, Dr. William E. Munson, Jr.; daughter, Sheryl Castelhano (Curt Stenson); granddaughter, Erin Engelbrecht (Gerhard); grandson, Michael Munson; granddaughter, Anne Yeh (Rich); great-granddaughter, Sophie; great-grandson, Tyler; great-granddaughter, Phoebe; and close neighbors and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother James, and her husband Bill.
Services will be held at noon on Saturday, October 10, 2015, at A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Bethany Chapel, 710 W. Bethany Home Rd., Phoenix, AZ. Reception to follow immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to her favorite charity, Phoenix Rescue Mission, Hospice of the Valley, or a charity of your choice. And, give your loved ones a hug.
