

Elmer grew up on the family farm outside of Charles City where he and his older brother attended a one room school house. While still a minor, Elmer enlisted to serve in the Vietnam Conflict. In the army, Elmer worked in the motor pool, where he rose to the rank of Sargent. There, he repaired and maintained tanks, trucks, and equipment. After returning from oversees he was stationed in Yuma, and first visited Arizona. Upon discharge, Elmer returned to Iowa for a time, before relocating permanently to the Valley of the Sun. Elmer worked 34 years at Western Truck Equipment, eventually becoming General Manager. In his free time, Elmer hunted fished and explored the west that he loved. Elmer was a gentle man of intrepid character who taught his children to be fair and honest. He treated people with respect and stood by his deeds and actions.
