George was born in Boston, MA to George & Madeline Wingersky. He moved to Avondale, AZ in the 1950’s with his parents, sister, Carol, and twin brother, Richard. His family owned and operated a public pool where George worked as a lifeguard throughout his teenage years. He attended Agua Fria High School and went on to graduate from Arizona State University with a Master of Education. George then started his teaching career as a history teacher at Dysart High School. George was tremendously loved as a teacher, admired for his warmth, storytelling, and genuine ability to connect with those around him, leaving a lasting impact on everyone he met. He often received Teacher of the Year. George had a passion for football that he shared with his students as the boys’ football coach throughout his career at Dysart until he retired in 1998.
George is preceded by his mother, father, sister, and twin brother. In 1965, George met and later married Florence Joy Wingersky. Together they had three boys—Timothy, Michael, and Samuel. George is also survived by his cherished family: his granddaughter Ashlee and her son, Orion (“Pumpkin”); his grandson Andrew; his two bonus granddaughters, Kailee and Korie; and his bonus great-grandson, Brody.
After George retired, he spent time building custom homes with his son Mike until relocating to Rocky Point, Mexico in the mid 2000’s where he proceeded to live his best life. He spent his time building his condo near the beach, driving around in his Tom Car, fishing with friends, and smoking “Cuban” cigars. George continued to share his love for storytelling—the bigger the better—with his family and friends, and he loved life.
When he moved back to the states around 2015 and moved in with his son Mike, and they traveled, visited old friends, and went on many excursions, enjoying every minute of life to the fullest. George had many interests including boxing, football, baseball, and country music. George was a bright light—witty, quick to laugh, smart, kind, honest—but, most of all, loved. He was always ready for the next adventure. George just celebrated his 85th birthday and died unexpectedly, but peacefully in his sleep, knowing he was loved and respected. He will forever be missed.
