

Helen Cohen, age 97, passed away at her home, The Terraces, in Phoenix, Arizona on the evening of February 3. Helen Louise Baer was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Edwin and Helen (Felsenthal) Baer on April 12, 1920. After graduating from University of Louisville, she met the love of her life, Murry, and they married on June 14, 1941. Helen and Murry raised their three children in Louisville, Kentucky and Teaneck, New Jersey and lived out most of their retirement in Hackensack, New Jersey. She moved to Phoenix in 2013 to be closer to her family. Helen was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her 3 children, 5 granddaughters, and 8 great grandsons.
Helen loved to cook and entertain, and her family always looked forward to enjoying a brisket and mashed potatoes with lots of homemade cookies for dessert when they arrived for a visit. Helen was a skilled quilter, knitter and seamstress, welcoming every new member of the family with an afghan or quilt and creating matching nightgowns for her granddaughters and their dolls. Helen was also a skilled card player and enjoyed winning bridge hands well into her nineties.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Murry, her daughter JoAnn Ward and her sister Emma Jane Friedman. Helen is survived by her son Robert (Lora) Cohen and her daughter Cathy (Joel) Bez and her grand and great grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place Sunday, February 18th 11:00 AM at The Gathering Place at the Terraces of Phoenix, 7550 N. 16th Street in Phoenix.
