Hilbert courageously joined the U.S. Navy and served at the young age of 17. Upon his honorable discharge, he was offered a civil-service position at Luke Air Force Base, Litchfield Park, Arizona, as a jet mechanic. He proudly remained there nearly 30 years, until he retired. Hilbert also served many years in different branches of the reserves. Hilbert was a man of faith. He was a Knight of Columbus; 3rd degree.
He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Clara Abril, and their four children, Mark (deceased), Michele, Michael, and Margaret. He has seven grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
