Janet Altheria Howerton, our beloved mother and grandmother, at age 90, has gone home to her heavenly father. She passed away after a valiant six-year battle with dementia on December 3, 2023. She was preceded in death by her father, John Alexander Stuart, mother Polly Dicy (Penrod) Easley, stepfather George Raymond “Pete” Easley, sister Norma Constance “Connie” Stratton, brother Norvel Dean Stuart and her cherished son Randy Stuart Pinson.
Janet was born in Lakeside, AZ. on May 28, 1933. She lived in the White Mountains on a homestead until she was eight years old. In 1942, her family moved to Phoenix where she lived for the remainder of her life.
Throughout her life, Janet had many hobbies and passions. She loved to dance (square dance and ballroom dance), travel, ride horses, bowl, read, do puzzles, play cards (Uno, Phase 10, Gin Rummy) and Dominos.
In 1995 after 25 years, she retired from Motorola. For the next two years, she took trips to many places in the U.S. that she wanted to visit. When her mother had a stroke in 1997, she put her life on hold and spent the next two and a half years caring for her in her home. It was no easy task as she was partially paralyzed and could speak very little. Her love and selflessness was an inspiration to those she loved. When her mother passed away in 2000, Janet was able to go back to enjoying her retirement. She returned to taking trips and spending every summer at her cabin in the White Mountains, which she loved.
Janet was also a savvy business woman. In 1975, at the age of 42, with help from her mother and stepfather, she acquired her first rental property. She was able to turn that first home into a portfolio of five homes. She worked tirelessly to maintain the properties and keep them rented. As a single mother with a fulltime job and a two-year old, this was a lot of work. But she persevered and would say, “Not too bad for an old broad”.
Janet made an impact in many lives through her generous and caring nature. She loved, and was loved by many.
Janet is survived by her son, John Dean (Kelly) Pinson, daughters Nola Eileen (Louie) Giddings and Yvette Polly (Matthew) Rushford, two grandsons, six granddaughters and ten great grandkids.
A visitation will be held on Friday, December 15, 2023 at 11AM at Greenwood Memory Lawn Mortuary, 719 N. 27th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ. 85009. Her funeral will be at noon with committal to follow.
