I heard about your passing, Joan, and it's taking me a long time to say these few words, to you and your family.

I'm sorry that in the last few years I was no longer in touch with the family.
You and RD had always received me with open arms at East Medlock Drive, as I looked forward stopping by on a weekly basis, and having the chats we had, with a cheese crisp and a glass of milk.
You were a strong woman, and ready to give a word of advice, but never judging. I thank you for the time you and RD spent with me.

You are now next to him, and I know that is how it should be, as much as those left behind suffer for your absence here on earth.

To Jim, Leigh, Susan, Tom; their spouses, your grandchildren and great-grandchildren, my most heart felt condolences.

Know that I love you, and I will never forget you.

So sorry to hear the news about Joan.  It is a special loss.  My condolences especially to her family whom I have known my entire life.

She called me number one. I've always thought that was magnificent. I am honored to have a special place reserved as her first grandchild of many.
She wanted all of her grandchildren to succeed and would often step in and help to make sure success happens.
Maybe as a toddler learning to swim… and making to the edge of her pool, then hand-over-hand-over-hand-over-hand-over to the steps.
If you can get out of her pool, we'll take a trip to the “surprise store”.
(does anyone remember that?)

Maybe it's a troubled teen-ager that doesn't care about finishing high school.
She convinced this one that she was way overdue to get her diploma and wanted MY HELP to get it done. I helped her get through math. We were featured on the evening news as we completed our high school education together.
I see what you did there.

She wished me success right up until our final conversation about 3 weeks ago. I told her I have finally stopped smoking cigarettes. She was very proud and encouraging as it's something she wanted me to do for a long time.
She wished me success.

I may be sad and broken today but it's not because of my grandma Joan.
She makes me happy and has always been the glue that holds me together.
Just as you said to me recently, grandma:
“I'll see you on the other side.”

I was so grateful to meet and know Grandma Joan.  She was so fun to spend time with.  I loved the KFC lunches with the family, and listening to stories about her and R.D.  She was incredibly sharp and witty.  Wish I could have had more time with her.

Grandma Joan was a beautiful woman inside and out. I had the pleasure  of  knowing her for 17 years. She treated me like a granddaughter and I was privileged  to have her as a grandmother.  She was always smiling and she had a lovely laugh. We would talk for hours  and I loved to hear her stories of her youth. I have such warm memories  of the Finklea family. I am blessed to have been apart  of their lives.

Joan Finklea was an amazing woman and mother, as viewed many years ago through the eyes of a elementary student.  Yes, she had polio...but it was her laughter that I remember.  Anyone besides me old enough to remember the "Mothers' March of Dimes on Polio"?  Joan Finklea, a neighbor of ours up the street, was the inspiration for my mother to get her cards - the ones that one inserted actual dimes into the slots - and go door-to-door in the early 1950's to collect the dimes to help eradicate polio.  My thoughts are with her family, especially Jim.

I didn't have a chance to meet Joan but her granddaughter Jill talked about  what an amazing woman she was. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Finklea family.

Mrs. Finklea was my Blue Bird/Camp Fire Girl leader during the late '50s.  She helped her troop members to "fly up" to lots of opportunities and experiences.  As curious young girls whose only knowledge of polio was that we were given sugar cubes (with the vaccine), she demonstrated that we were only limited by our own choices.  Her canes only slowed her physical movements, not her joy and enthusiasm for working with her young girls.  Thank you, Mrs. Finklea!  And my prayers are with the Finklea family.
