

John Dale Howell, age 92, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, December 28, 2018. He was born on March 22, 1926 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to John Elmer Howell and Margaret Ethel Howell (Edwards). In 1933, during the dustbowl, Dale traveled to Arizona with his parents, and siblings, Fred, James, Josie, Judy, and JoAnne, stopping at farmhouses along the way for a place to sleep and to replenish water. He is a WWII Navy veteran, having participated in the Philippine Liberation. On August 24, 1946, he married Margie Phyllis Slaughter. Together they had two sons, John (deceased) and Richard. He worked in the copper mines in southern Arizona and later in life started his own business in the trade of custom marble and tile. Dale and Margie created many memories at Apache Lake and enjoyed traveling together in their motorhome exploring the country. Dale also had a passion for woodworking, a hobby at which he excelled in his retirement years. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Margie; son, Richard (Sandy); three granddaughters, Tiffany (Luis), Stephanie and Jennifer (Mike); four great grandchildren, Jessica (Mike), Andrew, Hudson and Jacob. He is also survived by his sister JoeAnn.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuaries Bethany Chapel, 710 West Bethany Home Road, Phoenix. Reception will immediately follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Vietnam Veterans of America or Hospice of the Valley.
