I got this too late to attend the memorial but wanted to express my sympathies.  John was my softball coach many years ago.  He made a significant impact in my young life and I wanted you to know that he was a wonderful person.  Thank you for sharing your husband and father with all of us.  He was a remarkable human being who brought out the best in the people around him.  He made playing softball and our young lives fun that summer.  I'll never forget him.

I passed my 88th birthday this year and through those long years I knew and associated with a large number of mental health professionals.  I know of no man, professional or lay, that was equal to John in his character and generosity.  John and I did many things together.  We went to Camp Tontezona and "assisted" the coaches.  For some time we played weekly (weakly) golf and John always was a friendly competitor.  He never complained or even mentioned his long standing bout with diabities.  He was a great and true friend and I will miss him always.

I was saddend to here of JC's passing. I knew him in the early 60's at ASU; he was a scholar, a gentleman, a Sun Devil, and a man of great character who touched everyone who knew him. He will be missed by all. My condolences to his family and friends.

Oh my, I am so sad to hear of John's passing.  I was at ASU, at the Phi Sig Fraternity House and John was the resident adviser.  My, but he worked hard to keep us heathens in check.  I moved away from the Phoenix area and lost track of John but it is obvious that he touched many, many lives and was loved through the years.  My sympathy to John's family.

I attended ASU in the late sixties and was from a small Arizona town with a graduating class of 99. My major was Socilology with an emphasis in Social Work.  I remember this tall lanky man teaching my education class special needs children although it was not titled as such.  My impressions of John were that he was a very kind person, I looked forward to going to his class and that he had a sense of humanity that impressed me as an undergrad.  I would have liked more.
  I did not see him again til the late 1990s and he escorted to the office where I was practicing psychotherapy Helen Stiles who was to become my partner but who at that time was looking for office space.  I then got to seem him sporadically over the next few years.
  I am saddened by his passing but am really glad about all the lives he touched including mine.  Bless you John and your family.

My condolences to the Nelson family.  I was another one of those ASU students whose life was touched by Dr. Nelson.  I was a "Liberal Arts Undecided Major" when I heard about the Special Education Law 94142.  I walked over to the Special Education Dept. to learn about what the law meant and ended up in Dr. Nelson's office.  I changed my major that afternoon.  I have taught for over 33 years (I did retire for a year and am back) and would like to thank Dr. Nelson for steering me into a career that I have truly enjoyed.

I am saddened to learn of John's passing.  John and I played in the marching band at North High School as well as on the varsity basketball team at North and the Park Central basketball team. Our paths crossed occasionally during our professional careers. He was a true gentleman, scholar, and caring person--one I will never forget.  He certainly impacted many lives and will be fondly remembered by all.

I want Dr. Nelson's family and friends to know how many people's lives he touched!  He was one of the reasons I went into education and even in his intro to special education course taken in 1974, I learned a wealth of knowledge and ideas that remained helpful until my retirement.  I had no clue that Dr. Nelson had such varied life experiences; that must be why he was so able to relate to all of us crazy university kids.  He was first a teacher, concerned with making learning pertinent and meaningful.  His kind and caring spirit plus professional and ethical demeanor probably inspired many, many Sun Devils.

My heart goes out to the Nelson Family.  I had the pleasure of taking his class in the 90's.  My mother who had previously taken his class made it a requirement that no matter what I studied, I had to take his class.  She knew the importance of the curriculum as an educator, but also knew that it offered information that went beyond the classroom.  I have been so grateful to him many times over the past years.  His information has helped me in my daily life with my own children as well as in the classroom. I did receive my degree in Secondary Education from ASU, and I know I am a better teacher because of him.  His love for his field, his dedication to making us understand the difficulties and joys that come with special needs children, and his commitment to his students is something I will always remember and cherish.

I extend my sympathy to the Nelson family. I started working on my Masters Degree in Special Education in 1968. I did not realize he too was just starting working in that department. He was so professional and personal he put me at ease as I went through the program. He took time to get to know me personally before administering my final test for the Masters Degree.  Needless to say I was very nervous and I doubt I could have succeeded with out his support and kindness he showed to me.
Years later, I contacted him to help me when I was working on my Reading Endorsement. He again was so helpful and went out of his way help me.
My life was blessed for having known him.
He was a very specail person and I know he will be missed greatly by his family and those who knew and loved him.

To the family of Dr. Nelson,
I am sorry read about the passing of Dr. Nelson.  He was one of my favorite teachers while I was at ASU in the early 1970's.  I enjoyed his classes.  After graduating from ASU, I would see Dr. Nelson at the ASU basketball games.  I think his son was a ball boy for the team. They looked so cute walking side by side after the game.  I am still teaching special education students.  This year is my 38th/39th year.  I think of Dr. Nelson every ASU basketball season.

I will also always remember my invitations by John and his son Chris to attend Family Holiday celebrations, ASU and NFL sporting events and just visiting at the Nelson home for fun and laughter. John had the unique gift of making everyone he encountered to feel like "Family" and that gift is his legacy. John's kindness is still alive today with the Love and concern exemplified by his immediate family and the Family that he helped nurture. Rest In Peace John...you will be sorely missed.
