

Dr. John C. Nelson, professor, sports enthusiast, consummate gentleman, and lover of good friends and times, died September 17th, in Tempe, AZ. He was 74 and lived with type one diabetes for 58 years. John Clement Nelson was born on April 6, 1936 in Safford, AZ to Jennilee and Leonard Nelson. John attended North High School, playing trombone in the marching band and forward for the basketball team. Graduating in 1954, John went to the Colorado School of Mines, to learn everything he could about Coors. He then transferred to Arizona State University, where he earned a BA in business, as well as a Masters in psychology. Peabody University (Vandebilt) in Nashville, TN was his next academic experience where he received a PhD in special education. He married the love of his life Sandra "Pat" Spencer in 1963. After John completed his coursework he and Pat returned to Tempe just in time for the birth of John Christopher Nelson. Two years later, Elizabeth Lee (Liz) made a family of four. John joined the Special Education Department at ASU in 1967 and remained until his retirement in 2000. John is survived by his wife Pat Nelson, his son Chris (Daryl) Nelson, his daughter Liz Hines (Corbin), and his sister Ann Nelson. He loved and was proud of his five grandchildren; Casey, Cayman, Quinn, Jayce, and Brenna. In addition, an army of friends and former students are grateful to have known him. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, September 25th at Carr Tenney Mortuary, 2621 S. Rural Rd in Tempe. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's name to the American Diabetes Association at P.O Box 22312 Alexandria, VA 22312.
