I was just thinking of your dear mother and only today learned of her passing. I was blessed to know her as she and her husband were very good friends with my parents, Tom and Fran Davis of Sun City.  

Ruth was a delight to all her knew her.   She cared so deeply for her family and friends,  and always included everyone in her love and prayers.   She will be greatly missed.

Our family will always remember the fun lady she was, our world traveler who followed us around the world and the devote lady who left us to be with our heavenly Father.  Goodbye our friend who always had the welcome mat out for friends, my family and myself.

We were extremely blessed to have Ruth as our neighbor and friend.  We met Ruth when we moved into the neighborhood across the street from her and began our family.  As Lee noted, Ruth NEVER forgot a birthday, anniversary or a holiday.  Ruth thoughtfully put together a small bag of chocolates for the boys on Halloween and she initiated the Christmas tradition of chocolate advent calendars for our boys—a treat they eagerly awaited every year, and a memory that neither will forget.  Our outside Christmas decorations included numerous holiday themed inflatables for the boys, but as they grew up, the decorations were for Ruth—because she enjoyed them so much.  She had the best view from her front door! A Christmas tradition that we shared with Ruth was an annual loaf of homemade cranberry orange bread. One summer, an uncle of ours in Chino Valley had a bumper crop of peaches and I brought Ruth an entire box—she shared the story of being a child during the Great Depression and wanting some canned peaches that were displayed in a storefront.  They were only 2 cents for a can, but her mother had to say “no” at that time.  Ruth treasured the peaches because of those memories. Through the years we shared cups of tea and conversations ranging from raising kids, our faith, and outrage at national politics.  We will miss you Ruth! May you rejoice in the arms of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Our dearest Ruth will be long remembered! We first met in the early 1990’s when Ruth was a cashier at Hallmark, 32nd St. and Shea. She was so kind and helpful as I was a frequent customer. We related well as Italian descendants, yet kindred spirits. We developed a friendship, then visited socially. She introduced me to her beloved husband, Don, who also became a kind friend, including during his transition in life. Ruth shared much about her life, her treasured family, and her amazing family tree on large paper scrolls. We stayed in touch long after she retired permanently. We then delighted with the surprise that she lived only a block away in my new neighborhood in 20O6. We visited each other‘s churches, met each other‘s immediate neighbors, shared more stories. Ruth always asked about my family life, sincerely caring. Her memory was impeccable, even to the end. I imagine her spirit…smiling broadly, eyes twinkling, dancing Joyfully! I will share a memory. My Mom who was  the stereotypical little (4’/10”) Italian  woman. She loved talking about the  Flushing house where she pretty much grew up. The family moved to Arizona in 1948. In the Flushing home, Mom spent most of the time with her Grandmother Domenica . She also spent a lot of time with Aunt Jean (Roberta’s mother). Mom was the only grandchild until her First Cousin arrived when mom was 15.  The other family members living in the Flushing home was Great Grandpa (Francesco Paulo). My Great Grandfather immigrated from  a town called San Mauro Castel Verde in Sicily which is not to far from Palermo. My Great Grandparents and Great Uncle Dom (the medical doctor on the family) were the Zito family that left Sicily for the United States. The other family living in the Flushing home were Aunt Rose married LTC Merrill Phoenix)  and Uncle Mario (the world traveler and college professor). The other family members were my Grandfather Joseph Zito and my Grandmother Estelle. They lived in Queens and my Uncle Nick (WW2 veteran and US Postal worker) 

So I started this memory about my Mother but, if you knew my Mother well she loved to talk about our family history. The other thing my Mother did was she remembered every birthday, anniversary,, date  of a family member passing away. For example, she would tell me this was  her grandmother’s birthday and she would be 152 years old ! Amazing she could remember so much detail. Every holiday was  a tale or story about the Flushing house. 
I raise a fine glass of wine in honor of my Mom  and say I love you and give a big hug to Melissa and Dad. In Jesus Name we pray.

Ruth was a dear cousin and friend to me and I will miss her greatly and, of course, our “catch up” telephone calls where I learned so much family history. Rest in peace dear cousin
