Born to Cecil and Martha Sheets (Humphrey) in Frankfort, Indiana, Larry married his childhood sweetheart, Linda J. Sheets (Alexander) and celebrated 58 years before she predeceased him in 2019.
Larry was a proud public servant serving in the National Guard for both Indiana and Arizona, worked as a Phoenix Police Officer for 20 years and an evidence technician with the City of Phoenix Crime Lab Unit for 7 years.
Larry’s true passion was aviation. He owned a plane before he owned a car.
He was Lieutenant for the Civil Air Patrol and President of the local Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA).
In his retirement years, Larry became a member of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) and toured with them across the country and into Canada with the B25 and B17 aircraft. Some of his greatest memoires were riding in the aircraft as they traveled from city and towns.
Most recently, he devoted himself to restore a Grumman AA-1. He was extremely proud of the aircraft, and the work he had done but due to declining health, he was never able to fly it.
Larry is survived by his 2 daughters and their spouses, Harriet Sheets (Dave Brown), and Laura Fisher (Earl Fisher); his grandson, Aaron Sheets (Kelly Sheets); 3 step-grandsons, Chad Fisher (April Fisher), Kyle Fisher, Michael Fisher (deceased); and 1 great-grandson, Ryder Sheets; and 5 step-great grandchildren, Max (Chloe), Caden, Lizzie, Jack and Harlow.
In addition, Larry is survived by his sister Charolette Barrella, and many nieces and nephews.
For the last 6 years he enjoyed working on his plane, traveling, and singing in a choir with his partner Dianne Wasgatt.
Services will be held at Phoenix Memorial Park and Mortuary on Monday, April 20, 2026.
