Mark Jewell, Sr., 69, of Glendale, Arizona, passed away January 26, 2023, surrounded by his family after a long battle with leukemia. He was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on January 27, 1954. He grew up in Louisiana with his thirteen siblings, working on the family saw mill, and creating memories that would be shared across generations of the Jewell family.
He was a Commander with the Royal Rangers Outpost 88, where he served for over 20 years, impacting the lives of hundreds of young men. Through this ministry he was able to see young men come to know Christ through a personal relationship, share his love for the outdoors, and share his passion for all of God's creation. Over the years, many memories were made around camp fires, building tee pees, and even a scale version of a tank out of wood to compete in a themed campsite competition.
His hobbies included buying and restoring WWII vehicles, creating replica artillery pieces for period-accurate reenactments for the community, and watching LSU football while trash talking all other SEC programs. As a gifted artist, he leveraged his gifts and talents to create and restore items that afforded many others the opportunity to experience our nations history. He took a great deal of pride in the accuracy and function of everything he brought to the "battle field", and always cared to share all the details in rich story form. While he lived a full life, filled with peaks and valleys, he never once met a stranger more than once.
He was a loyal father and an engaged grandfather who created many lasting memories. He looked forward to visits with his grandkids and instilled in them a love for Christ, life, and history. Sharing jokes (sometimes on repeat), telling stories from the saw mill, oil field, or the race track (sometimes with a hint of exaggeration) were always entertaining for anyone within earshot.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jerrie; children, Zella, Melissa, Corinna, Mark, Ruth, Kirk, and Zack; twenty-four grandchildren as well as beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. A family tree grown with deep roots, and wide reaching branches, he left a legacy that will impact generations to come.
Mark and Jerrie share a verse that offered them perspective from the time they were dating through today. "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen" Ephesians 3:20
A funeral service for Mark will be held Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 2:00 PM at A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuaries Bethany Chapel, 710 West Bethany Home Road, Phoenix, AZ 85013. Reception to follow at Phoenix Bible Church (behind mortuary 6060 N. 7th Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85013.
