Born in Detroit, Michigan to John and Justine (Ocepek) Dugar, Nancy attended Van Zile Elementary School, and later graduated from Pershing High School in Detroit. Her spirit of adventure and passion for new friendships inspired her to pursue a career as a flight attendant; however, her plans changed quickly when she met the love of her life, Christopher (Chris) Nuss. Nancy and Chris married in 1955 and shared 30 blessed, joyful years together. Chris was drawn to Nancy’s strength, kind heart, and contagious humor. Their love blossomed, and together they had four children. Throughout their marriage, the family — residing in Warren, Michigan — enjoyed holidays, sporting events, and, most of all, family vacations traveling the great outdoors in their camper.
After Chris went to be with the Lord in 1985, Nancy relocated to Arizona. There, she developed new interests and, as was her knack, made many new friends, enjoying cruises, singles clubs, and karaoke. Nancy’s love of travel took her to Europe; she even got to see Slovenia, the country of her family's heritage. It was the trip of a lifetime for her.
Nancy loved music and the fine arts. She would often be found in a theater enjoying a concert or musical. As one of the Orpheum Theatre’s distinguished patrons and supporters in Phoenix, Nancy — recognized as a “Star of the Orpheum” — financially gifted the theater, for which she was honored with an engraved brick on its Avenue of Stars.
Nancy will long be remembered for her love of family, and love of life. She adored gift-giving for her family; whether it was presents for her children or grandchildren or a simple greeting card, those whom she loved were always reminded of her affection. Nancy was a natural conversationalist and had the "gift of gab.” She was always considered the life of the party; friends and family knew well that the party didn't start until Nancy arrived.
Nancy is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Christopher, her beloved son, Kenneth David, and her cherished brother, Gerald Dugar.
Surviving are her children, Mark (Maureen) Nuss of Port Austin, Michigan; Susan (Stephen) Borowy of Phoenix, Arizona; Daughter-in-Law Sandra Nuss of Roseville, Michigan; and John Nuss of Peoria, Arizona.
Nancy is survived and loved by ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Those who called her Gammy are Lauren and (Braden) Carter; Mark and (Lauren) Nuss; Stephanie and (Justin) Hobbs; Christopher and (Jonelle) Borowy; Cameron and (Jenna) Nuss; Madison; Christopher and (Alisha) Nuss; John, James, and Luke; Beck and Bale; and Elene and Vera.
Nancy is also survived by her lifelong and very best friend, June Kowalski of Warren, Michigan. June was always Nancy's travel buddy, confidant, and “partner in crime.” Although the miles separated them, they spoke at least once a day.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that monetary donations be made to Nancy's favorite charity, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
