Nancy Kay Shannon (Halsey) received her final earthly reward at age of 84 on December 10, 2025, after many years on her Alzheimer’s Journey. Her passing was sweet, tender, and loving as she peacefully slipped into Heavenly Father’s care. At her loving and caring assisted living home of one month, she was released from her earthly pain, fears, hallucinations, loss of memory, and shrinking world due to this cruel disease. She quickly passed with no warning and was only attended at the time by her primary loving caregiver. Family members arrived soon afterward to ponder her life and thank our Heavenly Father for the opportunity given to her family and friends to know and honor this magnificent Daughter of our Heavenly Father. Nancy was courageous, brave, and tolerant for years throughout her affliction with this inescapable disease. During this total experience, we tried to always remember that Nancy was doing her best, as her world slowly collapsed around her. Our family members and caregivers also tried their best to serve her with love, patience, and understanding. She will never be forgotten as a precious soul, whose heart was filled with love for her family, friends, and others which she was honored to serve.
Nancy was born in the small town of Greenfield, IA on May 16, 1941. Her parents were Laurin Arthur Halsey and Tina Mae Halsey (Harper). She was raised in the nearby town of Fairfield, IA. She was blessed to enjoy the life of a small-town girl where most everyone knew everyone and the town square had a band stand which hosted a traveling circus yearly among other regular events. She was an excellent student with an adventuresome nature that found her, many times with her younger brother of two years, doing things like: gathering black walnuts; saving her brother from falling out of a moving car; turning cartwheels in a second story classroom, which cracked the plaster on the ceiling of the principal’s office directly below; etc., etc., etc.
Midway through her 8th grade year, her family moved to Colorado Springs, CO. There she met Larry, a pimple-faced geek in a white tee shirt and blue jeans. Not being impressed immediately, although Larry was smitten by this beautiful, happy little girl from Iowa, a friendship and even love developed just in time to proceed with 71 years of constant handholding. She got him through Spanish classes, and he helped her through Algebra. They soon became truly dedicated to each other, and their plans began to form for the years ahead.
Near the end of her 11th grade year, she moved to San Diego for 15 months to be with her family. This was devastating for both Larry and Nancy, but letters were exchanged daily. They were married two weeks out of high school in Colorado Springs, July 3, 1959. Four years later, after working full-time to put Larry through college, they moved to Phoenix, AZ, where he worked in his new computer job with General Electric. Blessings continued to pour in upon them, even eternal miracles from above, as their five wonderful children were
born for them to raise, nurture and love. Their family was eternally blessed as Nancy and Larry became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in March of 1969. Their entire life thereafter changed to focus on Heavenly Father, the Savior, and service to their family and church callings.
Nancy lovingly and faithfully served her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren throughout her life. She loved hosting grandchildren's Christmas Parties over the years, which included activities, gifts, movies, ornaments, treats, and lots of hugs and laughter. Additionally, she faithfully served in many Church callings including, class teacher, Primary President of primary aged children, and Relief Society President of women in the ward.
We will all deeply miss our sweetheart Nancy. We will try to live our lives following her pattern of love, compassion, laughter, and service to us and others. Her loving and exemplary life will surely be accepted in accordance with Heavenly Father’s Eternal Plan for her as a valiant Daughter of His.
