Norman spent his childhood in Brooklyn, NY where he enjoyed playing stickball and stoopball with his friends. Norman was drafted by the Army during the Korean War and spent two years in Germany. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Norman went to X-Ray technician school, where he also later taught.
In June of 1960, while working at Flatbush General Hospital in Brooklyn, Norman met Barbara, the love of his life. Norman was an x-ray technician and Barbara was the hospital supervisor. They got engaged 6 weeks after they met and married January 14, 1961. Norman and Barbara raised their three children, Michael, Nicole and Brooke in Queens, New York.
In 1980, Norman and Barbara decided it was time to get out of New York. With no jobs in place, they sold their house, got in their car and headed west. After a three-week road trip across the country the Steinberg family arrived in Scottsdale, Arizona. Norman found a job with the Sheriff’s Department working for Joe Arpaio. He thought it would be temporary but he actually enjoyed it and stayed until he retired in 1998. Norman and Barbara moved to Sun City in 2000 until they moved back to Scottsdale in 2021.
In his free time, Norman enjoyed playing on the computer, bombarding his friends and family with joke emails. Norman volunteered with the Shalom Club and Valley Life. He played poker but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Norman will be remembered for his kindness and his ability to put a smile on anyone’s face. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend and he will be dearly missed by all that knew him.
Norman is survived by his wife Barbara, his children Michael, Nicole (Scott), and Brooke and his grandchildren Kati and Landon.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, October 9, 2023 at 12:30pm at Phoenix Memorial Park, 200 West Beardsley Road, Phoenix, AZ 85027. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Norman’s name to Valley Life, the Special Olympics or Alzheimer’s Association.
