Olga Margarita Castañeda Lucero, was born on April 13, 1935 in Santa Eulalia Aquiles Serdán, Chihuahua, Mexico to Concepción Chacon Hernandez and Rafael Castañeda Alvidres. The eldest of six children, Mague, as she was affectionately known, grew up on her family’s ranch in El Torreón Satevó, Chihuahua, Mexico. No stranger to hard work, she worked faithfully alongside her parents and siblings, tending fields, caring for animals, and helping run the household with fidelity. Her fondest memories of those days were riding horses and playing in the orchards with her brother, Pepe. She loved learning and attending school, but limited access to teachers in her area meant she could only study through the fifth grade. Still, her passion for education stayed with her throughout her life.
Olga came to the United States as a teenager, living in Texas and New Mexico before eventually settling in Arizona. She was a decades long member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church and a doting homemaker. She enjoyed her daily cups of coffee, word searches, singing and dancing, country music, sewing, decorating her home for the holidays, making special sweets like capirotada, serving her church community, reading her bible and daily prayers, watching the Travel Channel, cooking shows, novelas, and taking care of her plants and many pets. She prepared countless delicious meals over the years, but her skillet lasagna stood out as everyone's favorite—a legendary dish that never failed to impress. She cherished spending quality time with her family, devoting much of her life raising her children, grandchildren and countless others to whom she was endearingly known as, Mama Olga. One of her greatest achievements was earning her U.S. Citizenship at the age of 33. She beamed with pride as she recalled the classes she took alongside fellow immigrants, where they encouraged one another and found strength in their shared experiences throughout the long and challenging journey.
Olga was predeceased by her parents and her beloved husband of 38 years, George G. Lucero. She is survived by her six loving children; Joe (Cathy), Ide, Loren, Gina (Frank), Gloria, and Santos; eleven grandchildren, Christopher II, Dolores, Elizabeth, Jared (Elysha), Mercedes (Jose), Vanessa, Miguel, Camilla (Jose), Tristan, Alec, and Tatiana; and thirteen great-grandchildren, Alicia, Ysabelle, Eidyn, Valerie, Christopher III, Layla, Ember, Serenity, Georgie, Jose, Alexander, Ava, and Ariana. She also leaves behind her five siblings; Jose Rafael (Esther), Delfina, Nicolasa (Bobby), Israel (Manuel†), and Hermelinda (Ruben); and many other family members, compadres, and godchildren who shared in her joyful spirit.
Although Olga’s physical presence may no longer illuminate our lives, her spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us. May her memory be a blessing, and may we carry forth her legacy of love and compassion in all that we do. As you continue to worship the Lord in heaven, dear Olga, your light will forever shine brightly in our hearts, guiding us with love and grace.
