Stephen Dale Magerkurth passed away peacefully at Hospice of the Valley in Surprise, Arizona on May 2, 2018 at the age of 61; after a fierce battle with cancer, stem cell transplant and numerous infections.
Stephen is survived by his children: Melissa Howard, Bryan Magerkurth, Erika McDowell, Matthew Magerkurth, and Jason Magerkurth; and his beloved grandchildren: Ian Kowalski, Andrew Magerkurth, Maddison McDowell, Brielle Kowalski, Alexandra Howard, Alison Magerkurth, Tatum McDowell and Christopher Howard. He is also survived by his siblings: Edward Magerkurth, Starr Blanchard, Dawn Magerkurth, and Ralph F. Magerkurth, and his loving partner Linda Magerkurth.
Stephen was born on March 2, 1957 in Elgin, Illinois to Ralph E. Magerkurth and Martha McGlynn. He graduated at the top of his class at DeVry with a degree in computer engineering.
Stephen went on to be a pioneer in the computer technology industry, and later led several impressive technological enhancement projects including the Rescue 21 simulator used by the Coast Guard. He was extremely motivated, creative and forward thinking. He passed on those traits to his children and lived by the motto “work before play”.
Stephen loved the water and used to compete in sailing races on Lake Michigan back in the early 1990’s. When he moved to Arizona with his family, he shared that passion and built lasting memories on the water through frequent family trips to Lake Pleasant.
Stephen’s ultimate accomplishment was watching his children flourish into the thriving adults they are today and spending time with his adored grandchildren.
A private celebration of life is being held on the water at Lake Pleasant with close friends and family.
