Summer Lee Dunn, our beautiful beloved angel, passed away on April 25, 2015. She was 36 years old. She was born on December 28, 1978 in Phoenix, Arizona to the late Jefferson Patrick Dunn and Sylvia Dunn Van Dusen. Her childhood was a happy one. She was much loved and more than a little bit spoiled. In the 5th grade, she transferred to Percy L. Julian School where her mother taught in the gifted program. She and her mother had four years together at Julian. In addition to being an incredible learning experience, Summer made several life-long friends. She attended South Mountain High School where she was an editor of the school yearbook. She attended Phoenix College, enrolled in the criminal justice program. She was an extremely creative person, she wrote poetry and short stories. She enjoyed baking, especially anything chocolate. If you smelled chocolate when you came into the house, she had more than likely been baking. Summer was an animal lover. She and her fiancé had two rescued dogs, a couple of turtles and five tanks of fish. Summer was a member of West Congregational Church and assisted with many rummage sales held there. She also was a great part of the creation of the (unfortunately short-lived) community garden at the church, which led her to turning a good portion of our backyard into an urban farm. Several things grew, several things didn't, but nothing grew better than the zucchini plants and sunflowers - lots and lots of very large zucchinis. Her greatest passion was her godchildren, AJ and Ariyana. She loved and cared for them for over 19 years. Those who mourn her passing are: her mother, Sylvia Dunn Van Dusen; her sisters, Dawn Ann Nelson and April Stephanie Dineff; her aunts, Joanna Waits, Toni Garmin and Penny Huckabee; her uncle, Scott (Nina) Dodd; several cousins in Georgia and Oregon; her godsister, April (Herbert) Hernandez-Chapman; her godchildren, Andrew Joseph "AJ" Hernandez-Chapman and Ariyana Hernandez-Chapman; and her fiancé, Brian Morgan. A memorial service is planned for May 17, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at West Congregational Church located at 4650 West Thomas Road, Phoenix, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to an animal rescue organization of your choice. Please feel free to leave condolences, remembrances, and memories at [email protected].
