Claire Bradbery was all about her family and farm. She was the great granddaughter of a nationally renowned inventor. Her chemical engineer father was a graduate of MIT. She had the same intellect but chose to apply it to her love of nature. As a teenager on a farm in Carbondale, Illinois she took great joy in riding and caring for her horse, Ken. Chickens, pigs and mules were of little interest at the time. Later in life, she raised horses, cows, chickens, fish, geese, barn cats, dogs and other creatures of nature on her farm in Honea Path, South Carolina. Daughter Susan Duvall, son-in-law Lynn Duvall, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren and relatives from near and far, spent many wonderful times catching fish with her husband Bob and riding in her John Deere Gator across beautiful pastures seeing geese and the results of pesky beavers.
Claire had hummingbirds next to her picture window who were the parallels to her energy and constant activity. When her husband Bob needed company driving a big rig across the country, she learned the 18 forward gears and took shifts driving throughout the country night and day. When she decided to breed unique European cattle, she did her homework with the Clemson Extension Services and created a quality breeding business. She spent many a night pulling calves into life from their mothers. Supportive of helping her community, she served as Vice Chair of the Greenville County Soil & Water Conservation District.
Claire Ide Bradbery was born in Springfield, Illinois. Her parents Roy Ide, Jr. and Jenny Coleman Ide were direct descendants of Abraham Lincoln’s first law partner and Lincoln’s close political advisors.
She is predeceased by her sister Jenny Ide Steinmetz, Oakland, California psychologist and survived by her brother R. William Ide, lll, an Atlanta, Georgia lawyer.
She and her brother Bill strongly disagreed on political matters, but always in a spirit of mutual respect, love of country and each other. With her death on April 17th 2024, in the tranquil surroundings of her farm, she now joins her two best friends, Mother Jenny Ide Smith and Daughter Susan Duvall.
Their mutual optimism, love of humor and life will carry on with Lynn; grandchildren Jay Duvall (Jessica), Stephanie Duvall Hedge (Joel), and great grandchildren, Jackson Hedge, Isabelle Duvall, Lawson Hedge, Harrison Hedge, and Ellison Duvall.
