Garvin Silas Porter

Garvin was born in Pickens on October 7, 1932, to the late Walter A. Porter and Marie Hayes Porter. He was a devoted member of Arial Baptist Church until his health began to decline. His dedication extended beyond faith—he proudly served his country in the National Guard. Garvin retired from Singer/Ryobi after 40 years of service. He instilled a strong work ethic, the value of family and faith in his family, influencing the five generations he was blessed to see. In his spare time, he enjoyed growing vegetables and sharing them with his family and neighbors to enjoy.

Garvin is survived by his daughter, Jane Ooten; daughter, Linda Burgess (Keith); grandson, Charlie Crumpton (Jessica); granddaughter, Carissa Parnell (Jamin); great-grandchildren, Amanda Crumpton Russell (Jeremy), Greyson Crumpton, Isabella Crumpton, Ayden Crumpton, Maisie Parnell, Madelyn Parnell and Silas Parnell; great-great grandchild Remy Russell; brother, Walt Porter Jr.; sister, Olive Porter.

Garvin's beloved wife, Laura, of what would have been 72 years on July 11th, preceded him in death two short weeks prior. In addition to his parents and wife, he is also preceded in death by his two son-in-laws: Dale Crumpton and Marvin Ooten; brothers: Paul Porter, Iva Porter, and Gene Porter.

A visitation for Garvin will be held Saturday, July 19, 2025 from 12:30 PM to 2:45 PM at Dillard Memorial Funeral Home, 2402 Gentry Memorial Highway, Pickens, South Carolina. A funeral service will begin at 3:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. A committal service with military honors will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
